- Especially in the model where Congress passes one (1) bill per year and just crams in everything under the sun including clauses like "[Rep Jeroff's Largest Donor] is hereby immune from prosecution for crimes committed"
- TODAY the NYT publishes an investigation into the Trump memecoin $TRUMP and how it has turned into a extraordinary venue for foreign influence campaigns. What we are seeing is potentially corrupt attempts to change US policy by paying the Trump family money. This is no "Russian Hoax" nyti.ms/4kkv7D7

View full threadCorruption requires explict quid pro quo. It is not corrupt to take an action that aligns with the interest of a person who gives you a gift, unless the official action was in direct response to that gift--a bribe. Terms matter. Accuracy and fairness matters. Regardless of what social media wants.
- I'm not allowed to let someone buy me an expensive lunch even if we don't talk business man, what da heck are you talking about
- 1) that's so clearly what's going on 2) you are claiming that bribery and corruption are one and the same and that's absolutely not true

- But the MCU worked because Kevin Feige had a vision he was executing on! The lesson of the MCU isn't "multiple directors works" it's "all direction must be subservient to one person"

- Who is the resistance, why are they not the Republican army, is there a Republican army, why does the FO use stormtrooper uniforms? When the FO blows up the Republic system, is that courescant, a planet we know? Or a different planet? If it's different why is it a different capital?

- They produced a trilogy without a central committee or first among equals visionary to drive it and it shows

- Do you think it's okay to tell stancil that he should get the bullet because he said a new hope isn't very political
- [Not loaded yet]
- They are telling him that he should be killed because he posted about Star wars
- [Not loaded yet]
- I wonder how much of a story there is of it being called Obamacare and people thinking it was just an executive order not legislation
- I have read all the Star Wars discourse and concluded that more people should watch American Graffiti
- Star Wars was a hit because George Lucas grasped the mass appeal of stories about 1) wanting to leave a hometown that sucks 2) driving really fast
- Star Wars but the soundtrack is Bruce Springsteen

- I think a lot of it started when his take-of-the-day was "the economy is actually pretty good, you're doing well" because "I'm doing bad therefore the Revolution is justified" is a foundational position for edgey online lefty posting
- [Not loaded yet]
- Dude like.... what are you talking about
- [Not loaded yet]
- they are saying he should kill himself/he should be killed, that's not dunking that's something far more sinister

- Arguably one of our foundational principles as a free Republic is that you are allowed to celebrate when a head of state/government dies

- He wasn't saying that shit in 1985 he was talking about heros journey and seven samurai
- [Not loaded yet]
- [Not loaded yet]
- Nobody else ever mentions it again in the film! In the context of ANH the Senate existing or not has no bearing. You are backfilling plot and implication where it did not exist when the movie first came out
- [Not loaded yet]
- Nobody dies in that scene! Vadar releases him! You aren't even getting the basic facts about the film right!
- [Not loaded yet]
- No! Because it's self evident! It's shorthand!
- [Not loaded yet]
- That's not a major plot point it's one simple line! The guys in the room make literally no comment on it! If it were a big deal they would have reacted, instead they all move on!
- [Not loaded yet]
- That's not what happens in ANH. That's the prequel trilogy, which is political! ANH is about an evil empire doing evil things and being defeated by the Heros Journey.
- [Not loaded yet]
- Yes it's the clearly Nazi inspired comically evil bad guys. That's not a political statement though, it's honestly just a lazy way of putting up a big sign that says "these guys are EVIL"
- [Not loaded yet]
- I mean that a film is really only a political film if politics are central to the plot, and if they *tell* us something about the film and our world. Raiders isnt a political film either, because them being opposed to the Nazis isn't a *political* statement, it's just an easy way of calling them Bad
- [Not loaded yet]
- Yeah I mean I think that's a bad way to look at movies. ANH isn't political because it does not interrogate or ask anything of the political dimension - the good guys are fighting the bad guys. RotS is political because the plot revolves around politics and it comments on politics
- [Not loaded yet]
- No but "movie features government" does not mean that movie is a "political movie". Legally Blonde 2 is not a "political movie"
- [Not loaded yet]
- You are using "has government" to mean "is political" and those are just two different things
- [Not loaded yet]
- Okay that's a stupid standard obviously "successfully demonstrates" can be a standard here. Stephen King could come out and say "the shining is political" and the appropriate response would be "oh...wait what?" not "well now it Is"
- [Not loaded yet]
- [Not loaded yet]
- well sometimes you look up and its pink so will obviously has lost the plot

- The Battle of Algiers is a Vietnam allegory. The hunger games is a Vietnam allegory. The Last of the Mohicans is a vietnam allegory
- this is a video posted by the Toronto police association. if you set aside the fact that this is a march for a cop that crashed his car choking on a hot dog, which is very funny on its own, this is the worst marching discipline I've ever seen in my life. I'm fucking crying
- Cops are the weirdest people in the world man

- There's also the value of being lucky with who is in charge. Budapest 1956 isn't that different from 1989 except that the people behind the guns accepted it. Dedra (after ep 8) feels more like 1989, Partagaz 1956
- Ghorman plotline backfilling implication of the state of Jedha in Rogue One, where it's clear that the empire pulled a similar move against the local resistance. Cassian remarking of the city "or what's left of it"
- [Not loaded yet]
- Which I feel like is where this is all building to - individual acts of resistance or isolated planets cannot take down the empire, which is why they feel they must merge into the Alliance under one banner
- The Japanese empire was murdering 200,000 civilians in China every single month of 1945

View full threadI don't know, we seem to have moved very quickly from the wonder that we (atleast I) experienced in 2023 from seeing AI generating images and providing coherent responses, to dissing it savagely
- If you mean "people" have moved from wonderment to derision, yeah part of that is seeing it be bad at things it purports to do well. My distrust of genAI is born from that exactly - it is NOT a natural language database querier, but *that is how it is perceived and marketed* and that's dangerous
- thierry goddard from andor looks like a caricature of a french peasant
- Have we decided yet if Ghorman's are Space French or Space Belgians?
- What it is is a whitewashed space Algiers
- Done. May I point out that I was fact checking not genocide-denying. Also LLMs will take your job
- But not yours, surely, since you are very special
- Amid all the other news, it's easy to become inured to the basic facts here. Öztürk: -Is not accused of committing any crime -Is nonviolent -Was in this country legally -Merely engaged in speech that the administration objects to -Has been locked up for six weeks
- As clear a habeus violation as possible
- Hahaha, oh come the fuck on. “I’m declaring a holiday, and you can’t have the day off, you get too many days off already”
- also we already get Armistice Day off (Veterans Day)
- Armistice Day is already a holiday! It's Veterans Day!
