However, everyone arriving in the UK, including those entering Northern Ireland, continues to need to enter in line with the UK’s Immigration Rules including obtaining an ETA if they are eligible.
The UK is at less risk from Russia than most other nations in the continent - plus, with a decent navy and nuclear weapons, we can just sit out the next European war if we choose to. With the current attitude eminating from the EU that feels like an attractive proposition.
The UK doesn't have to defend the EU - it is a long way from Russia, is an island nation and has a nuclear deterrent. It could quite happily be neutral and sit on its island or it could even sign a pact with Russia.
Ireland sucks generally but it is the easiest. You don't really even have to live there to do it. If you rent somewhere small and pay your tax there there are no checks about what time you actually spend there as long as you exit through NI
I think it is extremely obvious that they won't do anything - and frankly given how divisive this whole thing is and the other challenges in the world (including reform) that is probably the right decision. What we need to do now is prioritise improving this country.
If anyone wants FOM back they need to get it back themselves. Emigrating to Ireland and then surrendering your UK citizenship being the obvious and quickest route.
The world is so hard for young people I don't think many have the optimism left to expect positive change. My 11 year old nephew is already somewhat disillusioned with his future due to climate change.
There should also be variance in visa prices and naturalisation requirements depending on nationality - e.g. the Spanish should pay more and take longer
We should also be looking at removing EGate access for any citizens whose country doesn't reciprocate plus we should be looking at reducing the visa free time in the UK to 30 days from 180.
@andrewhesselden.bsky.social i find the dichotomy interesting- UK shouldn't get any benefits from the EU as no longer a member but at the same time should defend it.
If there are no benefits coming from the EU then we shouldn't by dying for them. What happens in Europe's mainland is not our concern. The EU is big enough to defend itself.
Then they can eat their greens and pretend to enjoy them. By the way you're a numpty if you think anyone who disagrees with you is a bot. How do I know you arent a bot either?
There would be no border checks and an Irish citizen can live in the UK without restriction but can't work, can't claim benefits etc and time accrued has no value without a visa - so no route to citizenship.
Looks like it is time to end the CTA and make dual nationality illegal in the UK - as well as making the maximum time on the ILR or settled status 5 years. If you want to live in the UK you take and only hold UK citizenship.
So you can apply for a youth mobility visa for 3 years for only, say, West or North Yorkshire and would need another visa to move to Lancashire. (Would be popular with the Tykes though)
