- Elon Musk, US oligarch, instructed Grok to post about the fictitious "White Genocide in South Africa" completely unprompted across Twitter. The Ai was forced to talk about the racist fantasy across thousands if not millions of unrelated posts in a ridiculous attempt at spreading racist propaganda.

- Hate speech doesn’t even exist as a legal category in the US. So any threats or incitement is judged under the standard tests (like Brandenburg for incitement) that apply to all speech.

- But teaching/normalizing fragility instead of resilience as the *expected*, typical response is just nuts.)
- No one could ever see how the boundless expansion of “harm” by such indcidents of “trauma” and needing to protect people from that “harm” ten years ago could ever rebound on the people pushing it. No siree. Totally unpredictable. Completely unforeseeable.
- (On a less sarcastic note I never could & still cannot understand whose interest is being services by teaching/normalizing that students, etc. should as a matter of course be expected to be psychologically shattered by anything from being strongly disagreed with to being exposed to offensive things.

- If you look at the income distribution from the late '60s to the late '10s (that's as far as the chart I saw went to) you will indeed see that the middle class is shrinking. And it's shrinking more from people moving UP out of it than down. But that still means further stratification as you say.

- On the one hand it seems they had to read the passage a sentence at a time, "translating" each sentence before getting to go to the next. Especially for stuff at the beginning of passage that makes things context-free so not clear to me how fair a test this was. On the other hand, English majors!!
- It is hard for me to overstate how low my opinion--as an educator, as a media studies scholar, and as a citizen--has gotten of legacy news media and most of the people that work within it over the past decade of the Trump era. A near gleeful perversion of what journalism is supposed to do & be.

- Just FYI because evidently Fox or OAN or whatever is pushing the lie that America accepted the Statue of Liberty and that’s equivalent to the plane. Congress VOTED to approve receiving the statue. So congress should vote on the jet

- Not necessarily. I know it’s in article of faith in many circles that landlords care about $ and nothing else, but small landlords often care quite a bit about tenant “quality” and I could easily see a LL preferring 75yo over 25yo (probably quieter, etc.) and so *not* going as hard on rents.

View full threadThe emergency declaration didn't lapse until the spring of *2023*. I'm not saying this was all wrong! (I think some things were fine and other things while fine initially went on too long). But it's unquestionable that he did a lot of memorable covid "stuff" across years.
- So that coupled with the much shorter amount of time Trump was dealing with covid makes it easier for people to feel -- and propagandists to manipulate people to feel -- that various things that actually happened under Trump happened under Biden. /end
- I think there's a lot of truth in this thread. Certainly the compression of perceived time and "blurring" make it easier to misattribute some covid stuff that happened during the Trump administration to Biden.
- But I also think a big piece is that for all the bad/dump covid-related stuff Trump did, he was only here for 10 months of covid. Biden was there for *years* of covid and he certainly did many memorable things -- eviction moratorium, imposing vaccine & mask mandates in places he could control, etc.
- It’s fascinating how all the big social media companies decided over the last decade that they weren’t going to let users effectively *search* for things anymore.
- Hell, even the SEARCH ENGINES decided over the last decade they weren't gonna let users effectively search for things anymore. So I wouldn't expect the SM companies to do any better. And yeah, it all totally sucks.

- The SCOTUS justice who coined the "fire in a theater" thing coined it in order to use it as a metaphor to justify upholding the conviction of an anti-war activist who was handing out dodge-the-draft pamphlets. So that's what you're defending when you wax rhapsodically about "fire in a theater".

- Oh, I fully expect the Brainworm Crew won’t approve it at all, especially for under 18. So it won’t even be able to be given in the US.
