Ads were a part of broadcast news long before you suggest.
But not at the beginning.
There were no ads.
No affinity for ratings numbers, etc.
Good lord, do you think advertising and ratings didn't appear until... when? The 60s? The 70s?
Radio was supported by advertisers for decades before TV came about.
And newspapers were ad-supported for centuries, literal *centuries*, before that.
I'm quite sure newspapers have been ad-supported since probably about 2 months after the first newspaper in the history of the world published its first issue. If not sooner.
