Assistant Professor of Political Science -- My work is on democratization, autocracies, the military, and political parties. Unsure of what to post on BlueSky when its cloudy outside.
- i wish grok broke down a week later so all of my students could submit final papers they haven't bothered to proofread about the mass annihilation of boer farmers

- This is great. Everyone in the House has to put their name next to a yes or no on impeachment (even if by proxy) and I look forward to every D who votes to table (ie kill) the resolution today explaining to the electorate over the next 18 months why they shouldn't be primaried
- "Billionaires don't care about money" is an interesting thought to have and say out loud
- Left Twitter is currently yelling at me because they’ve decided that talking to cops without a lawyer is fine if you’re a popular Twitch streamer, because then you have automatic immunity to prosecution. This might be the dumbest position I’ve ever seen someone negatively polarized into.
- Yeah, that tracks. @nbcnews.com

- We're all covering up holes in our reading, even the fanciest of us. Mispronouncing these kinds of names is similar to mispronouncing moderately fancy words; it means you learned it by reading a book, which is to your credit.
- I know that we’ve had a month worth of further constitutional crises but Kilmar Abrego Garcia is still in custody in El Salvador and that central crisis is a continuing fact.

- WOW. The Trump admin said they will review social media and deny immigration benefits to people saying antisemitic claims. They're even trying to deport people with green cards on alleged claims of antisemitism. Anyway, here's a tweet from an Afrikaner they flew here on Monday.

- Joe Biden is old. And the people around him knew it! You were under the impression his staffers thought he was young but—SCANDAL!!—they knew he was old the whole time. Bet that would have made for some exciting drama during month five of a Kamala Harris presidency.

View full threadThe big divide here is faculty who want to ban GPT in their classes without getting tanked in their reviews and faculty who actively encourage students to use AI in their classes. In conjunction with online classes, there are entire LMS forums of just GPT generated replies to GPT generated posts.
- My oldest took an online class last semester and had several group projects where they had to meet on Zoom and people would have ChatGPT listening in and generating responses they'd read the text from off the screen—she was *shocked* that people had the audacity to do that live

- Yeah, I’m seeing student reviews like this now, and in my dataviz class I’m getting a stunning amount of bizarre assignments with base r + tidyverse + even screenshots of plotly bc they're 100% vibe-coded —often with the reasoning that "hey, the code made *something*" Like, what are we doing here?
- As we also saw in the SCOWIS election, maybe there is no great crisis about What Democrats Must Do that requires taking the Very Bad Advice of the White Male Gen X/Elder Millennial Pundits or the Bitcoin Adjacent Word Policing Senators, bc a majority of voters do not like lawless authoritarianism 🤔🤷♂️
- They see the thermostatic backlash coming and want to be in a position to tell the right just so story claiming victory for their preferred policy positions
- One request for @pfrazee.com and the homies who make this Very Good website: it would be so cool to have a “Interactions with people I follow” tab. I sometimes lose track of convos I want to follow. The old Twitter verified tab was super helpful for this—would love something similar here!
- I’m a straight, cis, white guy so I don’t pontificate on trans issues often, but I genuinely do not understand why the default position is: Who the fuck cares, let people do whatever makes them happy? It’s incredibly weird when people are obsessed with other people’s choices. That’s common sense!

- This is fucking insane. I got detention in grade school for having a Casio calculator watch (that I didn't even use). I spent more time and effort stretching canvas for my painting class in college than these NYU students are doing on their actual work. It's fun to learn shit, man. WTF.
- It's almost as if granting a criminal blanket immunity was a bad idea.
- In @nytopinion.nytimes.com “Across the world, we’ve seen democracy in retreat,” writes A.G. Sulzberger, the publisher of The New York Times. “This anti-press playbook is now being used here in this country — and it could not come at a more difficult time for the American press.”
