- the thing (I think) people have trouble with is that a 50% reduction followed by a 100% increase returns you to where you started. you need to understand that percents work *on a base* and the base changes.

- Volcanoes are really good tests of our knowledge of climate change. When Pinatubo erupted in 1991, Hansen et al. published a prediction of what would happen to the climate. It looks pretty close to Zeke's plot and also pretty accurately matched reality. www.giss.nasa.gov/pubs/docs/19...
- Reposted by Andrew DesslerNSF-supported Unidata announced that almost their entire staff will be furloughed as of today. This is a huge threat to weather education and research at universities--Unidata provides crucial realtime data feeds of weather data, including satellite, radar, and observations.
- This is a seismic gut punch to the weather enterprise. It is impossible to overstate how important @unidata.bsky.social is in implementing many datasets/libraries (LDM, netCDF, THREDDS, metPy) we currently use in meteorological research & operations. www.unidata.ucar.edu/blogs/news/e...
- if you're in the area (London), this looks like a good way to make sure people understand the importance of science.
- Reposted by Andrew Dessler~45% of US corn production is now used to make ethanol, mostly for mixing into gasoline. That's ~13% of all US crop land already used for energy production. Using some of the same land for solar panels would capture 50-100 times more energy per acre.
- is it just me or do all these popes look the same
- Some scientists will leave and a lot more would leave if they could, but the scientific endeavor is much larger than it was the last time something like this happened, Nazi Germany in the 1930s. There's really no other country that has the scientific infrastructure to take many U.S. scientists.
- AGU GEC is looking for volunteers for the section awards committee. This is the award that gives out the GEC lectures, early career award, etc. This is a great way to give back to the community. If you want to serve, email me: adessler@tamu.edu.
