- For Lipton to write something that stupid, and then smugly follow it up with a little superiority dance...that's just a hell of a performance right there.
- why does Britain have nine hundred identical quiz shows where nobody appears to be keeping score, all featuring precisely the same eleven comedians in different combinations
- *Jimmy Carr laughs*
- Jimmy Carr is the reincarnation of Richard Nixon, body and soul. Uncanny!
- much like the 70s here when networks were king you'd have celebrities that you didn't allow to make movies easily or were between tv shows or were just a bit washed up but for pennies could fill a studio to make jokes about doing whoopie while day drunk to fill huge gaps in programming

- How many judges has the Trump administration nominated this year? Last I heard, the number was zero.
- Honestly we need a six season HBO multi-character show about the French Resistance, following both resisters and collaborators, with each season one year from 1940 to 1945.
-
View full threadI would also like to see the Czechs get more cred. We killed a whole commander! They killed entire towns in retaliation. There are cannibalism rumors about it! We were out here swinging.
- I read some stories once about what happened to some of the Germans in the occupying force who were caught unawares in Prague on May 9-10-11, 1945. That would not have been the way they would have wanted to exit this world...the SS in particular were singled out, and rightly so.
- Though the song is about a lost lover, I hear this verse when I think of dear friends lost to Trumpism: "Even for a moment of the happy times we shared / Living in my dreams since then / At the risk of losing only castles in the air / Come with me and we can try again..."
- I will never forgive Jimmy John's for running Big Town Hero out of the city of Portland. Never. (Yes, I can go all the way out to Gresham to have a delicious Big Town Hero sub, and I'm glad to still have at least that much, but...)

View full thread3. Lever House was the first glass-curtain skyscraper to be set *amongst* the traditional masonry buildings of Manhattan. That juxtaposition of itself had an effect on passers-by of the 1950s that people walking past it today cannot experience because the surrounding masonry is gone. [2/3]
- 3. [cont.] Perhaps much of the appeal of Hemingway to readers in the '20s was a similar juxtaposition of his writing compared with the prose norms of his time, which we cannot experience because our norms are so different. [3/3]
- Three thoughts: 1. Had detective fiction settled into that short, staccato rhythm by the time Hemingway made a name for himself using it in the '20s? 2. Hemingway would have been taken Seriously by Serious People in a way that detective fiction never would have. [1/3]
- The number of people who really do view cleanliness as a fundamental character blows my mind. How many people died of COVID because they thought they were intrinsically clean or intrinsically tough?
- Has the judge developed a sense of empathy for any accused thieves who appear before his court? Any empathy for people who desire what they do not own and have not earned?
- why look in the mirror and try to learn from your mistakes when you can just tell everyone any mistakes you've made were actually made by someone else
- The man who coined the term "cheese-eating surrender monkeys" lived long enough to see his own beloved political party surrender to the Nazis far more quickly and easily than the French did.
- If only it were possible to present this list with one statistic highlighted for each person: How many person-years of life their work has added or subtracted from humanity. You have a lot of influence? That's nice. Did you do anything good with it?

- Question for @slotkin.senate.gov: I know you've been busy lately lecturing progressives, but do you think you could have found the time to look into the public record showing why David Perdue is unfit for a job involving public trust, and perhaps not voted to confirm his appointment to one?
- [Not loaded yet]
- Tod, should that be $880 *b*illion? Or is the $880 million just for OR-2?
- The Democratic senators who voted for David Perdue to be given an office of public trust (the "YEA" position) all deserve to be primaried next time around. They're not meeting the moment.

- Thirty-two NFL owners had a chance to kiss Donald Trump's ass by choosing Shedeur Sanders in the second or third round this evening, and none of them took it. That says something about the current stature of Trump and the impression Sanders and his father have made on owners. [1/2]
- I thought the Browns would take Sanders. (1) The owner is a Trump man. (2) The Browns took Johnny Manziel 1.0, and they never learn, so why not take Johnny Manziel 2.0? If Sanders isn't drafted in the final four rounds, will Trump tell Pam Bondi to open a criminal investigation into the NFL? [2/2]
