- IMPORTANT: The Dutch invested €595 million annually on urban biking, resulting in €19 BILLION saved in public health care costs alone. That’s how smart governments do the math on investing in better mobility. Let’s be clear— it wastes public money to NOT do it. #CityMakingMath HT @modacitylife.com
- Intercity Direct train from Rotterdam Centraal to Schiphol airport and points beyond.
- It is so so so quiet here I can hear a heron dipping its beak into the water and a cow mooing behind me 700,000 people live nearby and I can only hear the person walking their dog Every 10-15 minutes a high speed train glides by
- This is something I hear from almost every group I guide: the surprising silence in the cities and the countryside of the Netherlands, which after all is one of the most densely populated countries in the world.
- A little bit of cycling bliss. This bikeway in Oslo was built last year.

- Are people still making/sharing starter packs? I still see them occasionally, but nothing like the flurry in those 1st months after the US election when the urbanism community was exploding here on Bluesky. Hope they’re still useful to new folks arriving. Here’s one of my many. Suggestions welcome.at://did:plc:ny5w2k6brb2kdubxnevke6li/app.bsky.graph.starterpack/3lbo4hwkrc62d
- Literally every New Yorker I’ve talked to about it has said they love it.
- NYC’s congestion pricing is a policy miracle: Less traffic, less noise, faster transit, more business sales, more transit revenue. And it hasn’t produced the negative effects outside the cordon zone we were afraid of. www.nytimes.com/interactive/...

- "Fietsvlonders" are mobile bike platforms designed to turn a car parking spot into urban bike parking. They’re modular, moveable, and cheap, making it easy to test better use of public space. When car storage gets swapped for bikes, entire streets start to feel different.

- 5 new school streets in Amsterdam! Gemeente Amsterdam (#DCEnetwork) is setting up 5 new school streets where cars are not allowed during school drop-off and pick-up times. During these half hour periods, the street will be open only for students and parents walking or biking. buff.ly/I9mlWOz
- Paris is transforming itself into a greener city. Recently, Paris residents voted in favour of making 500 more streets pedestrian. Thanks to major investments in walking and cycling infrastructure, the city has become one of the friendliest for active mobility. 📸 @emmanuelspv.bsky.social

- My latest Forbes article is all about SUVs. Specifically, it delves into two new research papers - one from traffic engineering, and one from public health - that shows how these increasingly-popular (and increasingly large) vehicles come with major downsides 🧪 www.forbes.com/sites/laurie...
- Upright bikes have been a game-changer for urban biking around the world since they first “exploded” outside of Europe — I wrote this with @modacitylife.com back in 2014, “In Praise Of The Upright Bike” back when we were still spreading the word in those early years. www.huffpost.com/archive/ca/e...

- Today on Volts: I talk with transit guru @humantransit.bsky.social about the state of public transit in the US -- which systems have recovered from Covid & which face a fiscal cliff; the best way to balance coverage & frequency; the tech bro fantasy of transit without strangers; bus myths; & more.
