- 11yo has gotten into KeyForge. Shame that lockdown + a ransomware attack really 1-2 punched that game just as it was hitting velocity in 2020. It’s so different from other CCGs and so much fun to play. I wish there was local community he could be a part of… spend allowance on a deck at an FLGS.

- Thanks, I’ll take a look! It’s def. a better intro to a game to have “ok this is what a real deck actually looks like,” even if it’s an inexpensive one. I get that the precon starters want to show off a variety of cards, but you get a skewed picture of the game when a deck doesn’t come together.
- Carcinisation strikes again.

- The kids and I had fun a year or two back with the Magic sets that are like “shuffle these two pre-constructed theme packs together to make a deck.” I liked that format.
- [Not loaded yet]
- Yeah I remember reading those early Duelist interviews where he was like “what if you played against someone and they had a card you’ve never seen before!” and I love that, TBH. Too bad the Internet happened 2 years later…
- And, since it has big IP behind it, it does get supported and played in stores and there’s more of a chance he could talk friends into trying it out.
- 60 card decks and 4 copy card limit is also hella exploitative. In practical terms, it’s just an across-the-board 33% markup from the functionally-equivalent 45 card deck w/ 3 copy card limit. Learn from Netrunner LCG! It’s good to see them improve on Magic in some ways, but like, GO FURTHER.
- It looks like it’s good to see the community acknowledge that the starter decks are crap… we noticed the lack of draw after 2 games, I guess it’s positive that that’s not a general feature of the game? www.reddit.com/r/Lorcana/co... (Once again missing KeyForge’s “draw back up to 6 end-of-turn.”)
- [Not loaded yet]
- Yeah it feels like a devil’s bargain… the only way to get enough people to play with is to have these IPs. But like, this one guy from this one Keyforge card feels more interesting than 90% of Disney’s back catalogue.
- [Not loaded yet]
- KeyForge has so many *chefs kiss* design decisions… Richard Garfield truly innovating. I don’t miss constructing decks per se… but it is an actual limitation that there’s not much to “do” with the game other than play it. You can’t spend an evening making a new deck, or painting figures, &c.
- We grabbed some Lorcana preconstructed decks to try out. There are some sparks of nostalgic appeal for me (Rescue Rangers!) but our relationship with Disney IP goes from indifference to “I feel incredibly guilty giving more money to the Mouse.”
- But, on the plus side, they made some pretty good design improvements over, say, Magic, that remove some of the frustrations of that game: any card can be a land, but it stays that way permanently; creatures are (mostly) only vulnerable after you’ve used them at least once; win condition is a race.
- And it sucks that games like KeyForge and Netrunner that have solved so many of the design mistakes of Magic: the Gathering, Pokémon, and other early CCGs have fallen to the dominance of the established games. Cait and I can play those with him, but it’s hard to get his friends into stale product.

- Yep! So good.
- The delightful flip side to this is being so reference-poisoned that the kids pick up and repeat them without knowing the original source. In case anyone is wondering why the 14yo will say “possi-bly” in the manner of the helicopter pilot from the Itchy and Scratchy Land episode of the Simpsons.
