11yo has gotten into KeyForge. Shame that lockdown + a ransomware attack really 1-2 punched that game just as it was hitting velocity in 2020. It’s so different from other CCGs and so much fun to play.
I wish there was local community he could be a part of… spend allowance on a deck at an FLGS.
Man, I remember KeyForge! A great game for people who like limited TCG formats. And then, y'know.
KeyForge has so many *chefs kiss* design decisions… Richard Garfield truly innovating.
I don’t miss constructing decks per se… but it is an actual limitation that there’s not much to “do” with the game other than play it.
You can’t spend an evening making a new deck, or painting figures, &c.
Yeah again, it's Richard trying to return to the initial surprise limited feel of MtG, where he envisioned people getting a few packs and just working with what they had. Pros and cons!
I dunno. Magic is still the best, but so many decisions WotC makes these days are completely alienating to me.
Yeah I remember reading those early Duelist interviews where he was like “what if you played against someone and they had a card you’ve never seen before!” and I love that, TBH.
Too bad the Internet happened 2 years later…
May 5, 2025 14:18I've been trying to recapture this feeling by barely playing Magic anymore and not following any Magic accounts, but occasionally inviting friends over to play. And they pull out cards I don't know and it's like "wow, they did that? Sure okay!!"
The kids and I had fun a year or two back with the Magic sets that are like “shuffle these two pre-constructed theme packs together to make a deck.” I liked that format.
