This has become my primary outlet for keeping informed about the political troubles in the USA.
- I really feel like more people need to constructively engage with this! You can think the moderation/centrism discourse is often braindead (as I do!) but the center left really needs a pretty robust convo about what winning, say, an Iowa or Kansas or Texas or Ohio senate seat would look like.

- What makes you think that they aren't calling their Republican Representatives? I am.

- The only reasonable possibility I can think of is that they had severe evidentiary problems and prosecutors didn't want to walk away from the case with no mitigation.
- RESULT: Omaha's Republican Mayor Jean Stothert just lost to her Democratic challenger John Ewing. Stothert, who was running for a fourth term, resorted to anti-trans ads and messaging around who uses bathrooms in the final stretch of the campaign. Ewing will be Omaha's first Black mayor.

- Yeah. That killed the whole point of replacing Biden and at the same time communicated that Kamala was a follower, not a leader. Trump pouncing on that statement definitely kept a lot of potential voters home.
- I’m actually really glad the anti-trans Republican candidate lost in Nebraska the very same night after a bunch of Very Serious People people spent all day “yes, yes, Dems need to be serious about moderating on social issues to win”-ing across the internet.
- If anything, being unconditionally and vocally pro-trans is actually more moderate than the average corporate Dem's position.
- Can you elaborate on that?
- John Ewing directly put down anti-trans attacks, calling them a "fake issue" rather than act mealy mouthed or adopt GOP framing like his mainstream Democratic peers did. Meanwhile the DNC is still in bed with consultants who called Trump's "Kamala's for they/them" ad one of the best ads ever.
- It was an effective ad for Trump. But the inability of Kamala to get more voters out wasn't because of that ad. John Ewing's ad was excellent and effective. I hope others will use similar messages. They'd be braindead not to in municipal elections with opponents focued on toilets.
- When he says that “businesses” will eat the tariffs, the goalpost he’s setting is that business PROFITS will drop and CONSUMER PRICES will not rise. Just so we’re clear.
- The largest businesses might do just that while smaller competitors close up due to the inability to match pricing or keep enough customers as customers switch to the larger businesses with better pricing. After competition dies the large companies can make back their "investments".
- here's the same thing, but showing percentiles it's a huge tax cut for the top 5% and way less for everyone else
- Expressing this in percent is completely misleading - anyone doing this is ignorant or dishonest. If your income is $20k and mine is $10m and we both get a 1% increase in after tax income, your income rises by $200 and mine rises by $100,000
- It's no misleading, it's just incomplete. This is one chart of many they produce. Few people do as much to clarify the intentionally muddied presentation of budget proposals from Congress than this person you're calling ignorant.
- New Pope Leo blasts non-religious people, saying (quite shockingly) that 'lack of faith' comes from 'the loss of meaning in life, the neglect of mercy, appalling violations of human dignity' We'll remain composed in the face of such abject nastiness, but it's untrue to say the least

- Easy mistake to make. Get some rest.
- The foreign emoluments clause was written to prevent exactly this. Blatantly unconstitutional

The general design of common law systems to never address clear issues which will become problems until after they are problems is a weakness compared to civil
