- Reposted by Christine JohnstonThis is the first big R1 to start making announcements. Schools have funded most people through the summer. We should expect hundreds of similar announcements over the summer and early fall, as institutions decide what they are going to do.

- Reposted by Christine JohnstonEuphemisms for pot have a long history: the 15th-century study of ḥašīš "weed" in Arabic, by the historian al-Badrī, tells us that 'In Yemen it is “the Green.” In Diyar Bakr, it is “the Dusty.” In Antioch, it is “Cat-head"...In Syria, it is known as “the Toasted” in Hama and “the Cheerer” in Homs.'
- Reposted by Christine JohnstonFor every dollar invested in public research grants the economy benefits $2.56 (for medical research). I think auditing the rich returns us $12 for every dollar invested but that doesn’t appear to be on the table.
- Reposted by Christine JohnstonThe NYT wants you to think universities became dependent on government. This is false. The government invested in the national research infrastructure by competitive grants to universities. The taxpayers built this. It got us to the moon. Won the Cold War. Created Silicon Valley. Made the McRib.
- What a great way to spend a Saturday! Some excellent speakers and conversations--videos should be posted on the site in the future Huge thanks to all the organizers and speakers!

- Reposted by Christine JohnstonReminder: we are being trained not to care about other people. It underlines the attacks on migrants, on DEI, on trans youth, on so-called "wokeness." Sure there are legitimate critiques but this is not about critiques. It's about supercharging capitalism's culture of uncare.
- Reposted by Christine Johnstonhalf-remembering that thing about how most Roman citizens experienced the fall of Rome as simply one day their local bridge went out and nobody came around to repair it

- Reposted by Christine JohnstonHonestly I'm glad they picked Harvard to try out this novel "we're mad" legal theory of revoking tax-exempt status, given its infinite resources, deep network of powerful alumni, and law school attended by 142 sitting federal judges. Good luck! 🫡
- 🚨🚨 The IRS is making plans to rescind the tax-exempt status of Harvard University, according to two sources familiar with the matter A final decision on rescinding the university’s tax exemption is expected soon, the sources said www.cnn.com/2025/04/16/p...

- Reposted by Christine Johnston🧵 THREAD: A federal whistleblower just dropped one of the most disturbing cybersecurity disclosures I’ve ever read. He's saying DOGE came in, data went out, and Russians started attempting logins with new valid DOGE passwords Media's coverage wasn't detailed enough so I dug into his testimony:

- Reposted by Christine JohnstonThere’s just so much shady shit in this story, but this really sticks out. Folks in NLRB’s IT unit were so freaked out by what they saw DOGE doing that they wanted to notify the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency. Then this happened:

- Reposted by Christine JohnstonI think the Ozturk case suggests that 1) yes, Canary is being used to ID students for deportation 2) someone in State is OVERRIDING evidentiary analyses (like the one WaPo reports that said there was no evidence against Ozturk) to sustain Canary "conclusions."
- It looks very much like the Department of Homeland Security memo seeking to revoke Ozturk's visa copied language directly from the Canary Mission website. Is DHS just following the "deport list" from an anonymous website? donmoynihan.substack.com/p/the-attack...

- Reposted by Christine JohnstonPeople love to list useless things done by Roman emperors, namely Caligula’s declaring war on the sea. But a technocrat “conquering space” w/an 11 min 🚀 flight carrying a brigade of rich female celebrities—when ticket $ combined are worth the entire NEH budget for a yr—is beyond Caligula levels imo.

- Reposted by Christine JohnstonWow. This is the full document submitted by Rubio against Mr. Khalil invoking INA 237(a)(4)(C). The standard in immigration court is extremely deferential; a judge must accept this so long as it is “facially reasonable and bona fide.” But this is so threadbare that it might not even satisfy that.
- "The two-page memo, which was obtained by The Associated Press, does not allege any criminal conduct by Khalil" "Rather, Rubio wrote Khalil could be expelled for his beliefs." Free this man immediately. apnews.com/article/mahm...
