I also love how this is considered selfish because it’s obviously popular to force them to do their jobs, something they have completely refused to do for months in the least productive Congress in modern history.

It's a twisted inversion of 'selfish', made possible by the internalization of party-over-country (because it's best for the country if the Democrats win, which they will if they get to run against morlocks, so they should lay low while the morlocks take over).
Also, by the presumption that the only reason to seek the office is as a stepping-stone to better job offers, so he must just be doing this to 'raise his profile'.
They see it as selfish because they are themselves so deeply steeped in selfishness.
