- Really delighted to see this nice work by Emiko Muraki published in HBM, and excited to get feedback from the community.
- 🚨 New paper out in Human Brain Mapping! 🚨 with @pennypexman.bsky.social and @rjbinney.bsky.social 🧠 We show that the anterior temporal lobe (ATL) semantic hub supports abstract verb processing—with distinct activity patterns for: • Emotional verbs • Mental verbs • Non-embodied verbs
- The Friday feeling when 2 papers are accepted in one day! Looking forward to sharing the news in full.
- Latest pub from the fab @veronicadiveica.bsky.social, in collab with @pennypexman.bsky.social, Emiko Muraki, and me.
- 🚨 NEW PAPER 🚨 We show that concrete (e.g., FLAG) and abstract (e.g., DEMOCRACY) concepts differ not just in the info they contain (e.g., sensorimotor, affective, social, linguistic) but in how these conceptual dimensions interrelate. 🔗 Link: rdcu.be/eb53b

- 🚨 Preprint Friday! 🚨Pleased to share this novel and exciting work led by Irina Giurgea in collaboration with Penny Pexman. "An unprecedented, large-scale word ratings study of associations with motivation." Mini -🧵 below... Link to Preprint:
- Reward as a Facet of Word Meaning: Ratings of Motivation for 8601 English Words: osf.io/h9m8u/
-
View full threadMoreover, in a series of regression analyses, we show for the first time that the motivation associated with a word's meaning explains unique variance in participant performance on lexical, semantic, and recognition memory tasks. (6/7)
- The study was preregistered and data are openly available at OSF. (7/7) Link to Preprint: osf.io/preprints/ps...
- Existing ratings of affect may capture part of the reward construct, but preliminary investigations revealed a need to understand aspects of word meaning related to motivation. Therefore, we report data from a large-scale word ratings study of associations with motivation.(4/7)
- We describe original analyses that show that our definition of motivation and the associated ratings capture a reliable dimension of word meaning that is distinct from other related dimensions like concreteness and valence. (5/7)
- Across neurophysiological and cognitive literature, reward is considered an essential aspect of human experience, comprising affective and motivation-related processes. The pursuit and receipt of reward greatly influences the types and frequency of experiences we engage in. (2/7)
- Therefore, reward could shape the way in which we learn the meaning of things. Despite all of this, the contribution of reward processing to the representation of concepts has received little attention. (3/7)
- When someone says neuropsychology but mean cognitive psychology/neuroscience
- A statement but far from a solution to anything.
- Big news from Finnish publication forum. Almost all MDPI and Frontiers journals will be downgraded to level 0 and thus are not considered as properly peer reviewed trustworthy scientific journals. julkaisufoorumi.fi/en/news/chan...

- So good to hear. Some meetings are a chore (the bad), some are necessary but wholly unsatisfying (the ugly) but there are those which (often surprise you and) drive you on (the good). Despite the unpredictability and mounting challenges, I love my job too. 🙂
- These 5 bright psychology undergraduate students are learning to use magnetic resonance imaging to research brain function at Bangor University. I’m proud we can offer this student experience via our world class imaging facility in the College of Medicine and Health.
- Looking forward to welcoming you as BNS program secretary for the penultimate time.
