Across neurophysiological and cognitive literature, reward is considered an essential aspect of human experience, comprising affective and motivation-related processes. The pursuit and receipt of reward greatly influences the types and frequency of experiences we engage in. (2/7)
Therefore, reward could shape the way in which we learn the meaning of things. Despite all of this, the contribution of reward processing to the representation of concepts has received little attention. (3/7)
Existing ratings of affect may capture part of the reward construct, but preliminary investigations revealed a need to understand aspects of word meaning related to motivation. Therefore, we report data from a large-scale word ratings study of associations with motivation.(4/7)
Jan 10, 2025 19:35We describe original analyses that show that our definition of motivation and the associated ratings capture a reliable dimension of word meaning that is distinct from other related dimensions like concreteness and valence. (5/7)
Moreover, in a series of regression analyses, we show for the first time that the motivation associated with a word's meaning explains unique variance in participant performance on lexical, semantic, and recognition memory tasks. (6/7)
The study was preregistered and data are openly available at OSF. (7/7)
