- My ongoing request: If your NSF or NIH grant was terminated--whether at Harvard or elsewhere--please report it here. NSF: grant-watch.us/submit-nsf.h... NIH: grant-watch.us/submit-nih.h... Our trackers are actively used in lawsuits and are often the only record that terminations ever occurred.
- Foreign adversaries are pumping disinformation into our social media networks, but we know very little about the consequences let alone how to ameliorate them. For years, Republicans have harassed us for studying this. Now, NSF has canceled all funding. It’s a profound lapse in national security.

- Science Magazine gets it wrong. 🧵
- “Her departure, which she announced this morning in an essay in Time, is believed to be the first time in the agency’s 75-year history that a member of the 24-person board resigned over a policy disagreement with an administration” @policyhound.bsky.social on Alondra Nelson’s bombshell resignation 🧪
- I did not resign from the National Science Board over a policy disagreement with the administration. If that had been the case, I would have stepped down in January.
- I resigned because of a profound breakdown in governance, transparency, and accountability at the NSF—issues I felt obligated to bring to public attention.
- 🧪 YASSSSS!!! 👏👏👏 Sooo excited to see this. Time *for us* to flood the zone! I'm especially excited to hear about the formation of Stand Up For Science **LOCAL**. Who will lead each local chapter? Could be you. We're the leaders we've all been waiting for to #StandUpForScience.
- At the end of this summer, the future of U.S. science and research will be decided. From weather alerts to cancer breakthroughs, science shapes every part of our lives. We need everyone in this fight. The Summer Fight for Science starts now. Are you in? The fight starts here: bit.ly/4ddiuqU
- In Chapter 2, we cover the history and traditions of research on cross-cultural childhood learning, noting the narrow framework of the western lens. We highlight how disciplines have come together to deepen our understanding of this topic. www.openbookpublishers.com/books/10.116...
- 📣 New paper by myself @djsmith90.bsky.social and colleagues published today in @royalsociety.org Proc B 📣 Grandmothers are often seen as key carers, but this isn’t always the case. We explore why in Agta forgers reflecting on the implications of demography for evolution of grandmothering 👵🌍
- "Imagine the auto industry without 3D printing. NSF funded that. Artificial intelligence? NSF. MRI machines that help doctors diagnose you? NSF. Doppler radar technology that makes aviation safer by conquering wind shear? NSF. Duolingo‘s underlying programming? NSF. The internet itself? NSF."
- The National Science Foundation was established 75 years ago this week, but as Professor Scott L. Greer writes in this commentary, it’s “been a bit of a rough birthday party.” michiganadvance.com/2025/05/13/a...
- THIS guy is who should be named on your protest signs, calls to Congress, & in every headline. Russell Vought. If you’ve wondered how such an incompetent administration is destroying gov’t at speed or why they are killing off all science, this authoritarian Christian nationalist is your answer. 🧪
- The worst happened. We were DOGE’d. Our NSF funding is gone. So now there’s nothing stopping me from sharing Expert Voices Together, a crisis response system for US-based researchers and journalists facing harassment. It's a true passion project. 🧵 1/ expertvoicestogether.org
- I spoke with Science about scholars—myself included—self-censoring. In my case, my team and I feared losing our NSF funding for Expert Voices Together (expertvoicestogether.org), a program, ironically, built to support researchers and journalists under attack. www.science.org/content/arti...

- “The NSF can be understood not only as a catalyst of scientific promise for national purpose, but also as a guarded response to fears about centralized control over knowledge and thought, shaped by the dark shadows of the Third Reich and the emerging Red Scare.”
- "For me, the answer now lies in refusal, the withdrawal of participation from systems that require dishonesty as the price of belonging." Today I am resigning from the National Science Board and the Library of Congress Scholars Council. I wrote about my decision in TIME. time.com/7285045/resi...
- I'd like to share about the different chapters in our book! I'll do one a day :) In the first chapter, we promote a comprehensive, culturally informed approach to studying childhood. We define what childhood is, and why childhood learning matters. www.openbookpublishers.com/books/10.116...
- The gender gap in BA degrees flipped in early 1980s. The gender gap in doctoral degrees flipped two decades ago. White men only earn about 26% of doctoral degrees in US. Conservatives are complaining about a *smaller* decline in WM representation than predicted based solely on education trends.
- EEOC accuses Harvard of discriminating against white men The evidence? White men were: 64% of Harvard tenured positions in 2013 56% of Harvard tenured positions in 2023 {aside: proud to have contributed to this 8 pp drop} www.chronicle.com/article/facu...

- 🚨 A proposed policy would reclassify career civil servants as political appointees, fundamentally altering how the government, and science, works. TAKE ACTION! You can submit a public comment to stop this by May 23rd ⬇️ www.federalregister.gov/documents/20... What you can do & why it matters: 🧵
- Work led by @deakinuniversity.bsky.social PhD student Rachel Mason. Very proud supervisor!
- Yes! Exactly what’s needed to #SaveNSF include letters like these that use stories of **local** impact to call on specific reps in Congress.

- Yes please call your Congressional representatives!!! #NSF is America’s seed fund making the US the leader is #science, #innovation and competitiveness
- A lot of really great resources here to #saveNSF 🧪 www.savensf.com/take-action
- THIS. The people I work with at NSF believe so much in the mission of NSF that even when the government decides they are no longer needed, they continue to fight to preserve our mission. Today is the 75th anniversary of NSF. Please watch this video.
- Hi. I'm Amy. Today's NSF's 75th anniversary, so I made a video: youtu.be/xnt2V4ygBG0 #ScienceMatters #NSFExcellence #AmericanInnovation #NSF #FederalScience #SciencePolicy #NSFRotator #PublicService #WeAreNSF #SaveNSF #NSF75 #Scienceat75 #ISupportNSF #FundNSF
- 🧪 Y'all, drop Amy—the last NSF historian—a follow, take her up on her generous offer and request!! 👏👏 "Like scientists, historians are empiricists." Offer: Reach out at LastNSFHistorian@gmail.com Request: Tell how NSF has affected *your* life, even if you're not directly NSF funded yourself.

- Dr. Marvi Matos Rodriguez is a member of the National Science Board, which advises the National Science Foundation. www.nsf.gov/nsb/members/...
- Thank you Jeremy for sharing. And in my day job, I build defense aircraft for our nation. As a member representing the industrial sector, I can say, it is critical for the federal government to invest in basic science and education, for the future and prosperity of all of us.

- For people calling senators and reps - multiple CONGRESSIONALLY MANDATED programs have been terminated at #nsf. Such as the Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation. Talking points: www.savensf.com/take-action
- Please share broadly. We all need to rise up for #NSF75 thank you @marvimatos.bsky.social for your leadership in the National Science Board. If not now, when?!?! 🧪
- On the subject of the National Science Foundation
- With all that is going on at NSF, it’s important for me to describe how important NSF has been for my career and the careers of my trainees over the years. This funding is so important for so many reasons.

- My graduate research was funded by the National Science Foundation. The research that sealed my tenure case was majority funded by NSF. Five of my graduate students have been funded by NSF. My current sabbatical is #NSFfunded. In short, #withoutNSF, I would not be the scientist I am today. #saveNSF

- Dunbar's hugely influential social bonding hypothesis for the evolution of human language, music, & dance is based on the putative increase in primate grooming time with group size. These are the supporting data, including a confound with substrate pointed out by others 🧪 #BioAnth 1/3
- 2/3 Substrate confound is from this article arguing that terrestrial primates are exposed to more ectoparasites, so groom longer, ie, grooming is hygiene not group-cohesion: www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti...
- We can quibble about data transformations (Dunbar used the arcsin transform for grooming time, iirc) & modeling strategies, but clearly there is little if any association between grooming time and group size Data file from this article comparing w/ humans 3/3 onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10....

- Come join us! I have startup funds to hire a postdoc for Fall 2025 at Rutgers to study intergroup relations. The job ad is at jobs.rutgers.edu/postings/249... & evaluations begin in 1 wk (5/16) w rolling evaluation. See 🧵below for a write-up on what I'm looking for in a postdoc. Please share widely!
- If you’re concerned about the impact of the proposed budget on Federal funding of science but aren’t sure what to say when you call your elected officials, remember that a coalition of professional societies representing nearly 100,000 scientists signed an open letter about this a few weeks ago. 🧪
