Chapter Lead of the Twin Cities New Liberals. Pro-liberalism, anti-"I'm too good for everything" cynicism.
- Reposted by PlaidulaThe actual word we should use for doomers is “collaborators”. It’s effectively what they are - it’s a way of selling surrender and compliance to yourself and others
- Reposted by PlaidulaImpossible to understate how much Trump II is an elite rebellion against the structures that gave them everything for basically no reason beyond entitlement and boredom, imho.
- Reposted by PlaidulaI am heir to 2,400 year old living traditions of self-government and historical inquiry, which have weathered two millennia of setbacks and long nights. They are heirs of a 10-minute old rebrand of a murderous 20th century ideology that failed almost immediately when tried. So, yeah, contempt.
- Reposted by PlaidulaAs much as people like to dunk on liberal elitism, “these Nazi punks are crass idiots and I refuse to bow to my lessers” is, for me at least, necessary for morale and stiffens my backbone when I feel like giving up.
- 1. The idea that 98% of Democrats are uncritically on board with current Israeli policy towards Gaza is laughable from any angle. 2. Why are we bringing the Dems up on this? Trump is obviously more aligned and culpable with current actions by Netanyahu, but I guess all the clout is in bashing Dems.
- This user blocks the quoter. The conservative FT of London showing more spine than 98% of Democrats. This is a genocide and everyone knows it. on.ft.com/3Z2yQge
- "Ah, but the high incomes will just move to the low tax states!" No amount of my income is worth living in a red state with subpar state capacity, even before accounting for the fact that the limited state capacity they do have is subsidized by the federal government and about to drop precipitously
- Reposted by PlaidulaI also think a key conclusion from all this absolutely needs to be “cis men who aren’t horrible need to be taking point on addressing this societal problem, for both practical and ethical reasons”
- Convincing people to be so deeply ashamed of voting for Trump they pretend they never did IS a method of persuasion, and it's one we haven't really tried yet.
- Reposted by Plaidulathe president wants to reopen alcatraz because he’s an old man with dementia who is mentally frozen in the 1970s and 80s. he’s not trying to distract you, his brain is just full of holes

- Reposted by PlaidulaEvery now and then I just pause and think that … we could have just elected Kamala Harris, and we’d still have an economy that was the strongest in the world; we’d still have an American-led trans-Atlantic order; we’d be assured that our universities would remain the envy of the world; … (1/x)
- This is true, but what the US haters don't want to come to terms with is: In its history, the US has evolved, unsteadily and not without fault, in the direction of its stated but unrealized ideals; the Soviet Union very much did the opposite.
- This is why, historically speaking, "the troops refuse to fire on a crowd of moms and grandmothers, shattering the perceived military dominance of the regime" is the good outcome, and we need every cringe wine mom we can get on our side.
- I saw a banger meme and didn't like it in time for a refresh (which I clicked to initiate) and now my day is ruined.

- The problem with this as a strategy is that purely vibes-based politics is a luxury good; when the economy tanks, marketing yourself doesn't make people less mad. This is related to everyone thinking there is no way for politics to actually impoverish them and Stove-Touching as a concept.

- "Strong and woke" is the way, obviously. (I doubt this is what Slotkin was arguing for)
- Voters want psychopathic policy, but they don't realize it's psychopathic until implemented because they haven't thought through the consequences of anything and aggressively oppose being asked to do so.
- Reposted by PlaidulaWalz: Here in Minnesota, freedom means several things. It means freedom from hunger and poverty. That means freedom to worship or not. It means the freedom to be who you are anyway you choose, and that is a birthright..

- Reposted by PlaidulaI'd say more precisely that we have people going all in on the idea that self-discipline is about having what it takes to dunk your head in a bowl of ice water every morning rather than having what it takes to treat someone different from you like a human being.
- Every single thing I hear about the new Trump initiatives to raise birth rates reads as "we'll do what Hungary is doing because we like Orban's aesthetics, and don't particularly know or care if policies work."
- A correlary of this would be that any "left" subgroup that is substantially better at narrative manufacturing than anything else should make you more wary, not less. There's a reason tankies, who are only really good at narrative manufacturing, are constantly ending up in sex cults tbh.

- The problem illustrated here is that a big reason their way of life is dying is because people, when younger and given a choice, opt not to continue it. So the only way to bring their way of life back is to make everyone else suffer, regardless of if you've looked down your nose at them or not.
- This from @jdcivicscience.bsky.social nails why small town, red America is not turning on Trump.

- As a Minnesotan, Pam Bondi can fuck right off and leave our trans people alone. I support any public expenditure necessary for the state to combat this authoritarian BS from the federal government.

- Reposted by PlaidulaThe purpose of the Trump/Bukele press conference is to spread fear among everyone who disagrees with Trump It’s not downplaying to emphasize that fear is the point, a very large part of it -that’s how totalitarian governments work! Therefore, don’t run around like a chicken with your head cut off.
- Here's how the left needs to change, from a liberal: 1. Stop elevating clout-chasers who want a politically ineffective movement for their interpersonal benefit. This will increase appeal to more people and make it easier to be in coalitions, which you need until you get more people.

- Syria/Ukraine test if someone's leftist politics are good vs evil. Whether or not they think liberals have sincere disagreements in how policies would *work*/*win elections* vs liberals just don't want to win because of (((them))) tests if they have a political theory vs a clout-driven aesthetic.
- Walk into the living room of a friend I'm visiting in Chicago, where she and her husband are eating dinner See a horror movie on MeTV on a Saturday night Me: "Is this @svengoolieofficial.bsky.social?" Husband: "You know Svengoolie?" Me: "Of course. I love Svengoolie." And now we're best friends.
- We can maybe get 70% of the way back after a long time of hard work, but the US will never have the economic position it held 1945-2024 again, because at minimum, we are no longer safe enough not to hedge against with whatever diversification is necessary in supply chains and financial assets.
- Reposted by PlaidulaI was thinking about this Joe and Tracy anecdote from the supply chain crisis on gummy bears. Things are probably going to get really weird in a few weeks in unexpected ways:
