- My sister's ex was careful to fill every second of the tape, so he searched out short songs and snippets of dialogue to fill between songs.
- I always tell my students about my first semester of grad school. Everyone (myself included) was desperate to prove how smart we were—except one student. He’d just raise his hand and say, “I don’t know what that word means. Can you explain it?” That kind of honesty was so powerful. 1/2

- Oh, neat! What a lucky find.

- Oh, so common words. Got it. 'Cause my friends and I often geek out about rare words we've just learned.
- I've always thought admitting to not knowing something and asking about it is a surefire indicator of intelligence. (Except when writers on here marvel over learning a new word. I hate that.)
- I'm curious as to why that's your sticking point.

- Shortly into my undergrad I was talking to some classmates and realized all of us had the same questions. That was when I decided I'd be the one to ask, because it's never bad for the prof to know that you want to learn.

- One that hasn't been mentioned yet is Decoder Ring, which is about pop culture history.
- When I was a kid, I somehow got in my head that it was illegal (?) for anyone to be named “Pope,” and then I met a friend of my mom’s whose last name was “Pope” and I was scandalized, despite being more or less Methodist.

- Of course, but when they take food from your hand they're using their lips, not their teeth.

- Or that sex appeal has little to do with visible muscles.
- The funniest thing about the pivot to women’s fiction and Romantasy that is definitely going on in the industry right now was all the moaning about romcoms and joining hands with snobs to bash them, as if that was going to magically make old school romance return and fill bookstores.
-
View full threadI picked up a romantasy the other day in the mistaken belief it would be a fantasy romance. It was not. It was a fantasy with romantic elements. And I wish I could get a refund, but I'll just donate the book and never buy that author again.
- I wouldn't be so quick to blame the author - they don't get to decide where they're shelved. And even a romance bookstore can mess up occasionally when faced with publisher marketing bullshit.
- If I die due to a failure of policy by the provincial government in Ontario, I know it might be very tempting to cyberbully Doug Ford with "AI Skyla" but please do not: please do the work and cyberbully him yourselves. You will be much funnier than AI me could ever be.
- After watching the AI video of the deceased victim, the judge told the family, "I loved that AI, thank you for that. As angry as you are, as justifiably angry as the family is, I heard the forgiveness...I feel that that was genuine.” I am speechless. www.theguardian.com/us-news/2025...

View full threadThe more usage it gets, the more it's allowed to be part of the process? "Jane Doe's rapist and murderer walks free, I guess the Jane Doe Chatbot wasn't sympathetic!" is what's gonna happen. It's not advocacy, it's not justice. It's just going to double down on the biases we already have.
- There's also an aspect of "you didn't really lose the person because you have the bot version" to be considered. It's gross.
- This raises so many questions. Why is the maid holding a random petticoat? Is she begging the bride to put it back on or she'll ruin the line of her gown? Did the bride just dig under her skirts to take it off first? And why?

- As for writing with dip pens, there's very little to know; it's not that different. You might have to experiment a bit, but it's easy. I have found that shimmer inks don't work as well with glass pens, but that's it.

- Which is quirkier: 1) a couple wearing matching jackets 2) a couple wearing matching shoes? (I declare couples wearing matching jackets *and* shoes fully weird and we will not consider them at this time.)
- Matching jackets is too normal.

- I get why some might do it; having someone else work out the economics and basic living details could be useful for people with no interest in that kind of thing. Personally I love the challenge of doing it all myself.
- I was looking at websites for Canadian sources for undies and such. While it’s great to see much more body inclusivity, the sites all showed models with the undies up their butt cracks. Including briefs. Why? This doesn’t make the undies look better and cannot be comfortable.
- Did you see Do and Dare? They're pretty good.
