Accountability in Policing
- I think a big part of the problem is how people in politics so rarely examine the assumption that the political appeal of a candidate can be reduced to things like biography and positions
-
View full threadPeople look at candidates and think, “I like / don’t like that person, what party are they in.” Everything else is mostly backfilled from that. You can 8 points ahead by seeming cool and competent and charming. Trouble is finding someone like that maladjusted enough to be in national politics.
- Counterpoint: AOC is cool and competent and charming and she's probably not winning a Senate seat in OH or TX.
- I don't think it can be "reduced to" positions, but it also matters for things like Senate seats in particular. I think AOC is a tremendously talented politician in those intangible ways, but she's not going to win a seat in TX and she probably wouldn't win one in AZ either.
- saw @jamellebouie.net post something yesterday about why Trump does his nuts press conferences is because he doesn't do anything. made me think about AI techbros & the throughline being: mediocre people (men) wanting adulation and respect but not being willing to do any work for it

- This is the best evidence of him not knowing things? Every person I know actually working on ML/AI is very smart and works very hard. The fact that AI stuff is overhyped and being forced into products doesn't really change that.
- [me stuffing gold bars into my suit jacket] listen, all of you who want to eject me from the party for "corruption" and "bribery" just want to shrink the tent!
- I'm confused, is there any evidence of "gold taking" or corruption/bribery? If so, eject away, but if not, I don't get the point being made.
- The highest paid editors in the world rewrote "Qatar Bribes Trump With" as "Trump Is to Accept" you know the way normal people talk normally
- I get that them calling it "bribery" probably requires a more explicit quid pro quo. But it's very very clearly illegal and unconstitutional under the Emoluments Clause, they can for sure call it that!
- It’s really striking how irregular the bands of mostly men conducting federal immigration enforcement are. They seem to have no particular uniform, they wear a variety of different agency initials on their tactical vests, or none at all, they’re inconsistent about displaying a badge…

View full threadThey are all feds. Please stop saying they are not or suggesting it. It is dangerous for people to think they are not law enforcement & just cosplaying militia. They are real feds.
- I agree it is dangerous, which is why they should clearly show their badges and faces and look like normal law enforcement.
- My new phone came with all the AI bullshit so I decided to try Google Gemini by asking it for info on a relatively obscure topic. And it continually lied to me. Over and over. I asked it to stop lying and just say idk if it didn't know but it kept on straight up lying lol. What is the point of this?

- That example doesn't have an exchange though, so it can't really answer? Unless you're filling in the xxx's with specific values I guess. If I fill in with a random number it seems to get it right? chatgpt.com/share/681f92...

- Yeah the letter/number combos does feel like something it really should be able to get right. (though, it is getting into "tokenization" territory which they infamously can have issues with)
