- as Musk's Memphis data center chugs away on natural, thank god local power is pushing back. they'll never get the returns they promised investors, so they'll just keep throwing compute, and the energy needed to make it, at the problem while dodging calls for actual results.
- god willing we can nationalize these data centers if/when we get through this, wind down all that can't be sustained renewably, and hand the rest over to NOAA and the NSF.

- I think what's wild is that, beyond us appreciating it from some ecoligical perspective, those structures *do* look cool. Like, I know we can't say I appreciate it for the exact same reason, but that it's beauty isn't lost on us speaks to some common thread tying us to fish and birds and so on.
- they should make a classical guitar that's as fun to practice as it is to play
- I keep going back to how somehow we got *the* worst guys running the country now. Like, okay, George Bush was bad but “cocky Texas Evangelical with oil money” is an identifiable type of guy. When you draw a two of spades, you might not be happy but you’re not shocked cuz you knew it was in the deck.

- if a madman threatens my loved ones I reserve the right to be horrified when they come under attack and shocked at the brutality that's directed at them. your opinions here speak to a profoundly rotten soul with no respect for empathy or pain. genuinely, fix your ugly little heart, dude.

- Do you think there's any way to increase capacity for that type of altruism? Make it easier for people to be good to each other in times of crisis? Just my opinion but I think people want to be helpful, like it's part of our nature, and wonder how we can empower the resilience in that.

- no, let's. ICE is bad for obvious reasons, police are bad for less obvious reasons. if we don't take the opportunity to educate people on why those reasons are often the same we will continue to be a country run by police unions and cop NGOs.

- I think that's the big difference, there are social situations where you expect to be exposed o engaging with strangers and others where it's not the norm. If I'm at some game I'm kinda putting myself in a place where strangers commune for a common purpose. The Train or a Plane is Not the Same™
- i genuinely hate the ongoing AI discourse. it's got all the usual characteristics of online discourse (people talking past each other, false equivalencies, intentional obtuseness) but now it's also causing a schism in the group I most closely identify with, tech-adjacent social-good-enjoyers

- Will happily take the stance that I'd rather one person's home be heated than for google to exist.
- I think this kinda brings us full circle to the water arguement, though. The amount of water/energy/resources its using at the end of the day are scarce and we should be concerned how scarce resources are used on an overheating planet.
- any resources we're organizing around ultimately frivolous endeavors (from AI girlfriends to Shein to single use plastics) should be scrutinized on their social impacts at both ends, moral hazard AND waste. I think there's room to do both.

View full threadHis Massey Lectures for CBC are another good bit of his work that's easily available and accessible and what I usually refer people to BUT there also used to be a BEAUTIFUL AND ASTOUNDING podcast called General Intellect Unit that covered all things systems, complexity, and commie cybernetics.
- genuinely love ever single person I met in that podcast's discord. Also, yeah, I know the feeling you're talking about, like there's some system of knowledge perpetuating itself across a network of hope, struggling for a better and brighter future, entelechy as he'd call it.
- MASSIVE Beer head. Did you know he was friends with Brian Eno? The coolest thing about Brain of the Firm is that it's second-edition release was broken into two parts, the first that was published before his time in Chile (management calculus) and the second was a retrospect of his time there
- it's wild seeing him go from talking about recursive system integrity to being like "we didn't have a supercomputer down there, so we had to use the real supercomputing, trust and relationships and coalition building".
