View full threadBlows my mind that the US has the highest incarceration rate in the world, by a LOT, and nobody seems to think there's something really fked up about that. America is just a bunch of criminals? It couldn't possibly be that prisons are stuff with falsely accused, drug addicts, and the mentally ill.
- Same with the US' gun obsession. Orders of magnitude more gun-related deaths and mass shootings than any other nation, and yet no sensible gun regulation or accountability. The US cares more about unfettered access to guns than they do children's safety.
- Know why this happened and STILL happens today? No, it's not because of racism, although that is often the motivation. It's because prosecutors have too much power, frequently abuse that power to secure an unrealistically high conviction rate, and almost nobody gives two FKs about it. #DAsAreScum
- Yup. Prosecutors have practically unlimited resources compared with public defenders who are overworked and underpaid. Prosecutors always run on "tough on crime" platforms, whereas public defenders are seen as "defending scumbags and thugs".
