I really feel like more people need to constructively engage with this! You can think the moderation/centrism discourse is often braindead (as I do!) but the center left really needs a pretty robust convo about what winning, say, an Iowa or Kansas or Texas or Ohio senate seat would look like.
It’s because of the senate map
The argument is just… what does moderation even mean? Be crueler to people who can’t punch back? That’s both cowardly loser shit and will also actively repel most people. They’re speaking in vagaries to mask that there are no real ideas, just the Racism Dial.
May 14, 2025 00:16Like what do they actually mean? It is important when people say “moderate” they say what they mean. Because every time it reminds me of this.
Here is a list of issues by salience and how well trusted we are. Surely there is room for movement on some of these that has nothing to do with being racist.
Yes. And a lot of, e.g., the "Dems can't win unless they're mean to trans people" arguing elites clearly just themselves hold right-wing social views on trans issues, but social desirability within elite circles makes that uncomfortable to admit, so they sublimate it into "we can't win otherwise."
The whole debate is braindead. Marijuana is seen as a lefty position, but it polls 20 points better than Democrats in red states. Very moderate. Also some people who scan as moderate, like Josh Shapiro have some left positions. For example, he favors reducing the punishment for murder!
MAGA created a large moderate space. It is tone/branding. 54% self describe as moderate.
Pete Buttigieg example.
Use “moderate” when touting 60%+ popular policies and “protecting all God’s children.”
-Middle class tax cuts
-Safe schools
-Protecting retirement
-secure border
-more jobs/better pay
@piperformissouri.bsky.social halp...I dont know where to start...
I see I've reached the "we're so totally fucked" part of the room. cheers
Exactly. For months people have been asking Democrats to do something, anything. People want progress they don’t want the status quo. That means pushing left not trying to be Trump light.
“I really don’t want to talk or even think about any of these issues, but the Republicans set the frame and I a helpless to do anything other than REACT”
