American Atheists
Breaking down barriers. Ending stigma. Promoting understanding. Fighting for church-state separation. Representing atheists in America.
- No, we really shouldn't.
- We're so tired.
- Okay this is more blasphemous than anything we could possibly say
- Don't get us wrong. We're usually big fans of blasphemy. But yikes.
- THIS IS NOT A DRILL. THERE'S A GIANT DOG AT #AACON2025
- 1) We don't need god. 2) We don't want god. 3) We don't need any supernatural help to make our nation any of those things.
- No, you're not seeing double. We just filed YET ANOTHER Supreme Court brief in a second case that threatens our nation's secular public schools. With the Christian Nationalist movement hell-bent on destroying public education, it's up to all of us to save our schools. And we won't stop fighting.
- A big thank you to our partners and allies at @secularstudents.bsky.social and @secularcoalition.bsky.social for joining our brief in this case. We stand united in our commitment to safe, inclusive, welcoming, and secular public schools that educate — and don't indoctrinate — young people.
- You guys
- 👀
- Yesterday, we led a coalition of secular groups urging the Supreme Court to make it crystal clear that a religious charter school cannot be funded with taxpayer money. Grateful to have @americanhumanist.bsky.social, @secularstudents.bsky.social, Center for Inquiry, and Secular Coalition join us.
- If the head of the White House Faith Office can sell supernatural blessings, so can we. ACT NOW, and we'll throw in magical cures* for ANY NUMBER of ailments!! Our faith tell us that together, with your $$$, we will stop bed wetting for good 💦 🛏️ *while supplies last
- Many thanks to #YouTuber @OwenMorganTelltale for initiating this exciting joint venture. You can meet Owen and hundreds of other atheists, agnostics, and freethinkers at our 2025 National Convention in Minneapolis, April 17-20! Register today at convention.atheists.org
- Here at American Atheists, we're incredibly grateful for the contributions of our trans members, volunteers, staff, and board members—today and every day. And to all of our trans friends and loved ones, we see you and we'll never stop fighting for you.
- As we said in our brief in this case, cutting out the countless Americans who work for religious nonprofits from basic safety net programs like unemployment insurance simply because their employer might have a religious reason for doing their work gets the First Amendment disastrously wrong.
- This Court has consistently put the speculative "rights" of religious groups ahead of the civil rights and safety of millions of Americans. More from our Legal Director @gtblackwell.atheists.org
- RFK Jr. has forced out the head of the nation's vaccination program.
- RFK Jr.'s anti-science, anti-vaccine extremism will kill Americans. Plain and simple.
- Have you registered for our 2025 National Convention, yet? You know who has? 👀 📣 Seth Andrews, creator and host of @thethinkingatheist.com! Meet us (and Seth) in Minneapolis this April 17-20. Register NOW 👇 convention.atheists.org
- Every word of @imillhiser.bsky.social's introduction to this piece is — infuriatingly — true. And the stakes are high for the millions of Americans who work for religiously-affiliated charities all across the country.
- Always appreciate when a piece tells you about a thing right at the top and lays out its argument: www.vox.com/scotus/40467...
- If the Supreme Court gives even more special privileges to religious employers, millions of American workers — particularly those who work for charities, in social services, or in medicine — will pay the price. Here's what our legal director @gtblackwell.atheists.org had to say:
- There are multiple elements of this that will shock people: 1) Religious groups teach Bible classes in schools 2) ...during the school day 3) ...in part because Ohio law REQUIRES schools to allow them to do so.
- An Ohio school district just instituted a new policy: Religious groups that teach Bible classes during the school day cannot give students candies and toys to help bribe their classmates into taking the religious lessons. www.friendlyatheist.com/p/columbus-s...
- From @gtblackwell.atheists.org's analysis in our State of the Secular States Report: "Currently, 28 states allow school districts to offer released time programs, and two [other than Ohio (Oklahoma and Tennessee) make it mandatory for school districts." In 7+ states, schools must give credit for it.
- More from @gtblackwell.atheists.org: "Given that groups like Lifewise Academy are pushing states to adopt mandatory released time laws that provide school credit, this is an issue of growing significance that will certainly be tested in the courts." states.atheists.org/analysis/rel...
- Donald Trump has issued an executive order attempting to shut down the Department of Education. This is just the latest lawless attempt to undermine secular, inclusive, public education by the White Christian Nationalist movement, ripped from the pages of their Project 2025 agenda.
- Amen.
- Join these faith leaders in advocating against SB 10, HB 1009, and any other bill that would require every K-12 public school to display a government-selected version of the Ten Commandments in every classroom. Read more about it here: www.interfaithalliance.org/post/166-tex...
- Abortion access. Bodily autonomy. Freedom of thought. We will always stand up for the rights of all people to be free from religious coercion. And religious equality, church-state separation, and secular government are the best ways to protect those rights. #internationalwomensday

- That's all being an atheist means, yes. But we represent atheists — the people. Not atheism, the belief. And while atheists aren't a monolith, the overwhelming majority of us agree on a lot. It's our job, and part of our values as an organization, to be bold and unapologetic in our advocacy.
- Hey we found some of that waste Elon has been talking about
- Today, we filed an amicus brief asking the Supreme Court to defend workers' First Amendment rights. "Empathy knows no creed, and charities around the country employ millions of people who each have their own reasons for doing charitable work. Their rights must be protected."
- Many of the federal workers who have been summarily fired already had a plan for what to do with their lives: public service. And that's what we want. Dedicated public servants who help make sure our water is clean, our air is breathable, our parks stay open, and our civil rights are protected.
- During a meeting with constituents, Republican Congressman Mark Alford of Missouri had a simple response for federal workers who lost their jobs due to Elon Musk: “God has a plan and purpose for your life.” It didn’t go over well. www.friendlyatheist.com/p/gop-congre...
- This sort of rhetoric is disgusting, un-American, and downright dangerous. No one is above the law. And it is exactly what the White Christian Nationalist ideology has been pushing for years — the idea that Donald Trump is a "savior" figure who is ordained to rule and is answerable only to god.
- "In Texas, we have our work cut out for us. My job is to advocate for issues that are important to us and push back on issues that are harmful and oppressive to us." -@wiljay.bsky.social, American Atheists' Texas State Director, on the #SecularLobbyDay *happening now* in Austin
- Vought is an extremist who essentially wrote the extreme White Christian Nationalist Project 2025 agenda that's driving the Trump Administration. He's a dangerous zealot, a threat to our Constitution and democracy, and should be nowhere near the levels of power in our government.
- Seems like just yesterday Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds refused to say whether the Lutheran Church was a money laundering organization. Ope, that's right, it WAS just yesterday.
- They should look inward. The second Trump Administration has been terrible for religion and faith leaders, including Lutherans, Catholics, Episcopalians, and others. Read our full briefing detailing the Trump Administration's attacks on faith communities: interfaithalliance.org/new-interfai...
- Thrilled to announce #Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison will be a featured speaker at our 2025 National Convention in #Minneapolis. Registration is OPEN. Don't miss out on this amazing event and, most importantly, our incredible community. Reserve your spot today at convention.atheists.org!
- White Christian Nationalism seeks to enforce rigid, regressive, and largely religious gender norms on *all* people. These orders may start with trans people — and that's bad enough — but they certainly won't stop there. Read our sign on letter led by the amazing @nwlc.org and 170+ partners.
- We joined @nwlc.org and 170+ organizations to condemn Trump's cruel and lawless anti-trans executive order. This order doesn't “protect” women from any real threat, but actively endangers all women. Read our full letter here: app.sosha.ai/s/xXF39KAK
- In the face of ascendant White Christian Nationalism, Martin Luther King Jr.'s words in response to the 1963 Supreme Court decision that removed mandatory prayer and Bible reading from public schools — and gave rise to American Atheists — are just as relevant today.

- NEW: Our 2025 State of the Secular States report finds that half of all states fail to protect religious equality. Last year, we saw the spread of draconian abortion restrictions, discriminatory anti-trans policies, and a troublingly successful effort to privatize and Christianize public schools.
-
View full threadBut it's not all bad news. Ballot measures and initiatives have, thankfully, allowed advocates to advance reproductive rights and oppose school privatization in multiple states. We expect that this success will continue to result in a backlash against those methods of direct democracy.
- More from our president @nickfish.me: “In the weeks and months ahead, Americans who value their First Amendment rights must understand their state legislatures are increasingly the last bulwark against religious extremism.”
- Our president @nickfish.me: “The outsized and intensifying impact of White Christian Nationalist groups must not be ignored in 2025, and we urge the majority of Americans who do not support their hateful ideology and extreme policies to fight back.” This report is a valuable tool in that fight.
- The bulk of the dangerous legislation from white Christian nationalists targets schools and youth. We've seen released time laws, school vouchers, religious displays and curriculum, and attempts to replace counselors with chaplains.
- "Arizona does no vetting of new voucher schools. Not even if the school or the online school 'provider' has already failed, or was founded yesterday, or is operating out of a strip mall or a living room or a garage, or offers just a half hour of instruction per morning."

- Counterpoint: yes there is. And it protects the rights of all Americans — including Christians, Jews, Muslims, Buddhists, and the nonreligious — from government coercion. But these guys don't care about that. In fact, they hate genuine religious freedom. What they want is Christian supremacy.
- Texas Republicans have filed a bill to place a state-sponsored Nativity scene in the Capitol. “There is no such thing as the separation of church and state,” said the bill’s sponsor. www.friendlyatheist.com/p/texas-repu...
- We'd rather not.
- Just … just imagine any other president-elect appearing in a commercial like this. www.washingtonpost.com/politics/202...
- Just... No.
- ICYMI: Our #Oklahoma State Director gave Ryan Walters a report card to remember in this week's @theoklahoman.bsky.social
- Head to newsweek.com/opinion to read our team's full response to Christian nationalists who think their holiday traditions are better than yours and the revisionists seeking to rewrite our nation's long history of religious neutrality (lookin' at you, First Liberty Institute). And Happy Holidays!
