- Really astonishing how few people in the City are wearing suits these days (and really, I know this is well-commented on, but the gilet thing is terrible)
-
View full threadAbsolutely, but the folks wearing the gilets are not those people
- That I definitely agree with!
- yeah thats been my journey, I wear a button down shirt and chinos and still feel overdressed at times, i dont really want a strict dress cose but it is funny how in all the employability discussions 'have students dress like this is a workplace' doesnt really come up...
- I wear collared shirts and it makes me feel overdressed sometimes
- You mean the looking good or the suits? I'm sure there are always people who care about looking good, but the City is very much a fitting in kind of place, in my experience.
- There are definitely people there who do both
- A mysterious form of anti-charisma that I will not pretend to understand nor do I wish to…
- I would say that nerdery + snark = a popular combo (everyone loves those things, right? Right?!)
- Here it was starter packs and being relatively early. I had 1k at the start of Nov 2024, then Trump happened… I have more followers than I did on Twitter.
- I sometimes wonder if people at the really elite institutions ever think about this stuff (because certainly everyone else does)
- Government once again governing a fantasy version of the UK rather than the one where most people’s lives haven’t been touched for the better, and in various ways, by immigration for years.
- Really good, really important reporting by @georginaq.bsky.social:
- It’s just so grim
- Given that the new pope went to graduate school at the Catholic Theological Union in Hyde Park, I really want to know if he ever drank at Jimmy's. True Hyde Parkers will understand.
- Also, has he been to the Medici?
- I really really don’t want to take VCs side but they are operating in a climate, you know, the government set the terms of AND RIGHT NOW (pre-white paper and all that) SEEM TO BE DOING NAFF ALL TO IMPROVE.

View full threadThe problem is that universities are underpaying most of their other staff, especially at the bottom, and that VCs getting these giant salaries often aren’t qualified or competent
- That's the thing: if we were other professions, most staff would be getting a bit more money, too. And there would be a degree of expectation--and possibly even consequences--around what the VCs do that simply doesn't exist now.
