I hate horse-race politics as much as you do, but talking about 2028 Dems is a proxy for who's really leading the Trump resistance right now. And you'll be shocked that Beltway journos have it all wrong. Here are 6 Dems who actually have what it takes

May 6, 2025 15:33So many Buttigieg comments -- I think he'd be a great POTUS but my mind is on folks who are new to the national scene or seem to have a whole new outlook (Booker, who was only 6th, or Murphy). Buttigieg gets a (totally unfair) penalty for his consistency
Thanks for the REM Radio Free Europe notice in your column---listening to it now and the first remix is awesome!

Pritztker and Walz....imho....as of now. No way a woman is at the top of the ticket....it's infuriating, but America is too misogynist at its core. VP, yes.
Do you seriously not even mention Pete Buttigieg in this entire column?
I question whether a fat white guy with funny hair can win a national election in the United States
Your list is spot-on. Pritzker/Booker would be my ideal 2028 ticket right now. I’d like to see AOC (and Buttigieg, who didn’t make your list) down the road.
Btwn his money & Chicago’s longtime broadly mercantile & Democratic establishment, Pritzker is definitely better positioned than a woman pol whose purple state is a largely a one-horse industry—cars—exacerbated by economic dependence on its close neighbor—Canada. Tougher spot than many Dem states.
I don’t see the point of fighting battles with Trump you can’t win. Then you just become fodder for his excuses on why his policies failed. Court battles that stop illegal actions, yes. Public protests that might sway Republican Reps, yes. Fighting to prove you don’t like him, not so much.
It's not up to Dems to fix a broken society that prizes vengeance over understanding and burning down over of building up. No Democrat can win in such an environment unless they run their own traitorous felon with a history of knocking people down and who promises to punish ppl they don't like.
Pritzker/Beshear!
Idea !
Do the same next week for the NJ Gov Primary!
No. Gretchen Whitmer isn’t running for President right now. She’s just serving her constituents. JB Pritzker is trying too hard & throwing the party under the bus. The rest are House members & the only member of the House to go straight from
there to the White House was James Garfield who was assassinated 9 months into his term & nominated by party bosses before they had primary elections.
If we’re getting rid of term limits, great. Let’s draft a proven winner: Obama
We should really start putting the word “leaders” in scare quotes, especially with regard to limp noodles like Newsome, Schumer, Jeffies, and their ilk.
Buttigieg polls high every time. I organized volumteers in central PA in 2019-20. Many Independents and GOP told me he's the only Dem they'd vote for- I heard similar things from other vols across the country.
It's foolish to dismiss him.
All great politicians but not my list.
If you hate it as much as I do, you wouldn’t do it. Stop.
Andy Beshear anyone? Two term Dem in a deep red state that is well liked. Beshear-Murphy or flipped, take your pick. That would be my ideal ticket.

STEPHEN A. SMITH: Skip!
SKIP BAYLESS: Go ahead, Stephen...
SAS: You know -- you KNOW I hate horse race politics!
SB (chuckles, waves): You do, you do.
SAS: BUT
Chris Murphy and Pete Buttigieg!
We need an EXPERIENCED fearless foreign policy expert at the top & an EXPERIENCED fearless domestic policy VP.
So that's Hillary (1 term) & Kamala (next 2 terms).
By then some of the younger candidates will have grown into their roles. It needs to be more than oratory, infuencing & popularity)
It’ll be Pete. Love Pritzker but the Lefties aren’t voting for a Jew, also a problem for Shapiro.
I don’t think Whitmer ever wanted to run anyway.
#TeamPeteBeing loud & holding little pep rallies does NOT mean a person is qualified to deal with a national security crisis, public health crisis, AND an economic collapse in 2029.
Talk is cheap. EXPERIENCE is the ONLY thing that matters.

If tomorrow Pritzker were to donate $3 billion of his vast fortune to reduce tuition at Illinois-state universities, I might consider him a viable candidate. Until then, let the GOP be the party of the oligarchs.
Murphys immigration bill leadership is an anchor who he won’t be able to get away from.

Am really tired of the criticism of Whitmer. Sure it would be nice if she had criticized Trump but the Michigan economy is most affected by tariffs (auto mfg)plus we depend on federal funding for fighting the Asian Carp (tourism) and the jobs provided by the air force base.
She probably doesn’t want to have to fend off any further kidnapping schemes
