if you can explain how it’s a “Vietnam allegory” other than there being a rebellion of an occupied population and some fighting, in one movie, taking place around trees, I’ll take it seriously

That’s….the main storyline- that plus guerrilla warfare.
Yes as every critic has acknowledged, it’s not an allegory if most of the set pieces don’t mimic 1:1 the terrain and geography of the underlying inspiration.
For example, Miyazaki’s Castle in the Sky has nothing to do with Japanese nuclear tragedy, as it takes place in the sky, not an island.
