- While this report presents itself as an apolitical “review of evidence and best practices,” it deserves the same scrutiny and careful fact-checking as any government-produced document. Journalists should quote it only with appropriate context and after thorough vetting.
- We've made some more updates for our style guide to reflect the changing media landscape. Here's what you need to know ✍️
-
View full threadWhen past news coverage deadnames/misgenders a trans person: Do not proactively update previously published stories when someone quoted or referenced in a story changes their name or gender identity. We've added more detail on when and how to make these updates.

- Gender-affirming care defined: Gender-affirming care describes forms of medical care that trans people seek as part of their gender transitions. This may include counseling, puberty blockers and/or hormones, procedures like electrolysis, or surgery.
- Gender-affirming medical care may also be used to refer to cosmetic or medical procedures pursued for gender affirmation regardless of whether the patient is transgender.
- Language around transgender healthcare: Phrases like transgender medical care or transgender health care may be clearest for a lay audience.
- Transgender health care is a very broad term, encompassing everything from family therapy to medication to surgery. Journalists should strive to use the clearest language possible, including the medically accurate names of surgeries and treatments where necessary.
- "Trans issues" is a euphemism: Like culture war, the phrase trans issues is common shorthand in political reporting, standing in for the myriad ways in which trans people are politicized.
- Reporting on anti-trans politics and policies benefits from clarity and specificity; euphemisms like trans issues provide neither. Consider: What is the trans issue at play in a given story? Let the answer to that question guide your language.

- Happy Trans Day of Visibility! To celebrate, we're awarding more than $15,000 in stipends to 30+ journalists to support them. These stipends will help develop careers of trans journalists, support fair and accurate coverage of trans communities, or both.

- We need your help to support the urgent, increasing need for accurate journalism on trans communities — and the trans journalists who are often producing that work. Here's how you can help:
- We're always working to promote more accurate, nuanced coverage of trans rights and communities in the media while also supporting gender-expansive journalists in the workplace. That includes our style guide, with tailored guidance for different beats and mediums:
- Our new Workplace Resources Guide compiles tools from the journalism industry, LGBTQ+ organizations, legal experts, and security advisors. The guide has been compiled with trans journalists in mind, but much of it will be useful for any journalist or newsroom leader.
- Through our Level Up program, we've been able to support journalists with non-traditional backgrounds. More than 60% of recipients are either students, or early-career journalists who didn't attend a traditional journalism educational program.
- We want to document the consequences of executive orders and other federal actions that target trans communities. Know of public records we should FOIA? Let us know: docs.google.com/forms/d/1PWt... Learn more about the project and our partnership with @muckrock.com 👇
