- Still remember images of folks lined up 50-deep at gas stations during the Carter administration. One picture was worth hundreds of news articles.
- This was probably on someone's wish-list but tbh I'd have preferred Aristotle's laughter and comedy books, a bit more Sappho, the rest of Tacitus' histories (seriously, cliff-hanger), and pretty much any of the lost Suetonius. Probably gone forever. Just saying. www.theguardian.com/science/2025...
- Yeah, disappointing that some folks think the entire library may be focused on Philodemus. The hope has always been that it was a wide ranging collection and might reveal some lost masterpieces. I guess we’ll have to wait and see.

- I somehow got on his campaign email lists & I was always getting offers to be in a drawing to have dinner w/him or win some other prize if I only donated $47. But we never saw any announcements of any winners. 100% sure there were no winners.
- If you were in Congress, what would you do for the State of the Union? What do you think Dems should do?
- Consider the optics. Best would be a big rally of people outside, w/TV showing empty seats inside. TV wud have a hard time ignoring it, mite even do split screen w/him speaking & silent video of the crowd outside. Slotkin does rebuttal while he talks, outside, so TV wud use clips of her & big crowd.

- Can the state file the bribery charges on their own?
- So when are we talking about the State of the Union? Are the Dems going to ALL boycott? All walk out? Call for massive demonstrations all day long outside the Capitol? Or sit on their hands and politely boo 2-3 times? Time to ask our reps...

- What's funny is he thinks he's humiliating. Trudeau but in reality, he's rallying Canadians to back Trudeau and maybe even saving the Liberal Party's chances in the next election.

- Help me here tho. So Adams lets ICE go into Rikers, supposedly to remove folks who are jailed there and move them to a jail elsewhere, so the feds will have to pay for them? Or is he kicking them out of the country with no guarantees that the receiving country will continue to jail them?
- WSJ sub: “Indian Partition went smoothly enough, right? Will try to remember to check this before publishing.”
- Wow. So all the Israeli settlers on the West Bank cud move to Gaza and all the Gazans move to the West bank and have their own unified country! And give the Gazans the Negev so they'd have access to the sea. Think big! Also, why can't pigs fly?

- I also get tired of the weird folks they pick as bad guys. First season of Slow Horses was great cuz the bad guys were real & believable. But then they do one where it’s the spy agency itself is corrupt. That’s about as stale as it gets.
- I just did not find it believable, particularly Knightly as an assassin. Plus those shootouts with dozens of folks getting killed yet no cops show up before it’s over.

- He's not blaming DEI, he's blaming women and non white people.
- Yes! So can we all stop saying "DEI" and instead say he believes "Negroes" and "girls" and gay folks (pick your own slur) are never good enough to qualify for responsible jobs? That's what he is saying.
- i think it is important to say that the open and explicit racism of the president and the vice president isn’t just uncouth or “controversial” but a direct attack on tens of millions of americans and a dereliction of their duty to represent the entire country
- Instead of letting him get away with saying he wants to do away with DEI, can we ask him if he believes "Negroes, girls and fops" should be barred from serious jobs that only white folks can handle? That seems to be what he is saying.

- But the talk is also a problem. Dems need a chorus of folks slamming Trump as a selfish, vengeful, lard-assed fool surrounded by suckups destroying the US in their stupidity & ineptness. Every weird idea, typo, slip of the tongue needs to be highlighted, not ignored.
- I would be more inclined to give Elon the benefit of the doubt over the Sieg Heil salute if he hadn't just endorsed the closest thing Germany has today to the Nazi party

- But it is already the law. He can do an extension but he still needs either to repeal the law, which a lot of conservatives oppose, or find another solution which won’t be easy. He now owns this so while everyone sez Dems gave him an easy win, they also tossed him a very hot potato.

- Non-rich whites made clothing from cheap store-bought cloth, had one pair of cheap shoes. No public schools, no access to capital, no demand for mechanics' skills which might have built a middle class cuz slaves cud do those tasks on the plantations. Bad system for both slaves & non-rich whites.

- Good book "History of Georgia Agriculture" shows how despite efforts by state officials, most non-rich white farmers refused to folo good land mgmt practices, rotate crops or use better seeds. Conclusion: most were happy to grow just enuff to get by so they cud spend time relaxing, hunting, fishing.
- There were no public schools, so few non-rich whites had the skills to manage a plantation, nor a way to access capital to buy land & slaves. Slaves cud repair wagons, fences, etc., & to perform most mechanics tasks, so there was little demand for those skills from the non-rich white population.
- Plus slaves mated and produced more slaves, which were valuable. I assume they cud have hired white folks, if they'd paid enough money, but most poor whites seemed to prefer to go off on their own and not work for someone else.
- Slave labor was cheap in that while the plantation owner had to feed & house the slaves, they did most of that work themselves, i.e., planted their own gardens, raised their own chickens, built their houses, prepared the food, etc. The occasional medical bill was not a significant expense.
- The cotton economy was very lucrative but terrible for non plantation owners. You needed huge acreages, cheap (slave) labor & access to capital, which only the wealthy had. It pushed out most other commercial agriculture. There was not a single dairy farm in the South producing goods for sale, e.g.

- It is entirely possible both versions are correct: the Iranians were never going to release the hostages if it meant helping Carter, but they were happy to tell Reagan they wud delay the release until he was president, something they were going to do anyway, in order to curry favor with him.
