- Also a masterclass in truncating Y-axes :)
- Helpful NYT article showing 30 exclusion restriction violations for studies claiming covid is an instrument for their preferred x variable nytimes.com/interactive/2025/03/09/upshot/covid-lockdown-five-year-charts.html
- Interesting piece. "the battleground over U.S. politics won’t be entirely in courts or in Congress — it’ll be in financial markets as well. And, it promises to be a hell of a fight." www.nytimes.com/2025/03/09/o...
- Exactly. We are now paying the tab for democratic elites' obsession with electoral strategizing, and their related distrust for the streets, student protests or any kind of contact with radical anything...
- 🚨Grrrreat opportunity to join a 2-year research master with us!!! Ideal for students looking for great (and almost free) pre-PhD training. Also: not in the US :)

- Good discussion featuring @profsanderlinden.bsky.social, @yamilrvelez.bsky.social & @sumitra.bsky.social re. Ecker et al´s "Why Misinformation Must Not be Ignored" piece in this thread. Summarizing my thoughts.... 1/5

View full thread3. Conceptually, the narrow definition of misinformation has prevented us to connecting the concept to related types of content that may be even more consequential, such as "misleading" content... Recent @kakape.bsky.social piece www.science.org/content/arti... makes that point effectively. 4/5
- Worse: the focus on a few Global North cases has not helped us connect the concept to related ones such as propaganda or rumors, which we know from much qual & quant CP research to be hugely consequential. Must do better there. Great effort at connecting here: www.cambridge.org/core/journal... 5/5
- 1. Problematic downstream effects of misinfo are probably really hard to identify with our designs (1-shot survey-exps, mostly)...we should not and overall do not misinform people over long term to see what happens. We are largely unable to map downstream effects which likely exist. So, 🤷♂️ 2/5
- 2. We sometimes do though. SELF-PROMOTION 🚨: www.cambridge.org/core/service... 3/5

- 🚨 forthcoming @thejop.bsky.social: super excited that the 1st paper on project with Alyssa Heinze and Rachel Brulé is now accepted. We show that inequality does not stop at the gate of political office: Indian women face large inequalities in voice & centrality AFTER they reach office 1/n
-
View full threadCONCLUSION: quotas alone are not enough. Complementary interventions + sanctions are required to ensure that gender quotas generate substantive change.
- Paper available here: www.dropbox.com/scl/fi/vjy0w...
- Relying on behavioral & reputational measures of voice/centrality/influence, we compare women elected on gender quotas vs. others (mostly, men). Findings are GRIM: women appear less central on every metric, & are seen as less central by all pol. actors-inc. themselves. 2/n
- Why? We point to several reinforcing mechanisms. But stress that selection mechanisms & statistical discrimination are only a small part of the story...Instead, taste-based discrimination & the absence of sanctions for interference likely drives these inequalities. 3/5
