- What is maybe not obvious is: cavities that turn into abscesses may then go septic… and sepsis kills. Literally fluoridated water is a LIFE SAVING public health intervention (especially for children growing up in poverty, especially in the US with our extremely perverse health care ‘system’).

- Indeed!!! I wish we could try learning from the mistakes of others, but apparently we have to touch the stove ourselves…
- Question: those of you who follow me here, what made you choose to follow me? Was it because you knew me as an author, or from some other social media, or because you saw a post from me here you liked, or some other reason? There's no wrong answer, I'm just curious how people find me here.
- When Bsky was small you seemed to have thought about how you’d use it and had a plan to use it ‘for good’, and that seemed worth a follow (I did also know you as an author).

- Goddamn I tell my students to all have a plan B, bc, like… I have one (a few actually…) but if I had no conscience I would totally make ‘get subscribers to my yarn of the month club and then fake my own death’ my new plan B.
- Enjoying the seeing so many students presenting on diverse topics at the @cuny.edu BMCC Annual Research Symposium! Let’s hope the federal funding that supports their work doesn’t get yanked out from under them.
- How are y’all?

- Gorgeous!!
- This is the last week of classes at CUNY and I am so SO tired. It’s only Monday & I dealt with 3 meltdowns today. And that’s not counting the ones other ppl had.

- I’d really feel better if this was Thursday morning… 😭 but I definitely appreciate your enthusiasm!! 🤩
- Interviewer: Can you explain this gap in your resume? Astronomer: It’s not truly a gap—rather, dust has obscured our view of that region, but if you would provide me with a very large infrared space telescope, I’ll see what I can do.

- Don’t blame me if you see yourself as the cows

- That’s a dim view!

- No no, you gotta say it like this: Uhhh, idk why we can’t make up the sums it’s like… dark? But matter?
- Oh, alternatively: Astronomer: Yeah, that was when Donald Menzel was the observatory director. (Historians of time domain astronomy: too soon?)

- Yeah I was just thinking… maybe I should have them so far indoors everyone is curled up under a blanket with a good book & a hot chocolate? Like… Kindergarten quiet time? Can I do that in a grad class?!?
- [Not loaded yet]
- Well, today’s weather was gorgeous but the rest of the week is supposed to be cold and rainy… so maybe indoors is best?

- Possibly too famous but the BBC’s In Our Time? Host is a dude, panels usually have gender balance, HUGE back catalogue (to ~2000?). Pick a topic, do a deep dive. ‘The Copernican Revolution’ or ‘Plankton’ or ‘Angkor Wat’ or ‘The Epic of Gilgamesh’ or ‘The Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth’, etc.
- Really looking forward to a fun family road trip driving <checks map> 6hrs for basic healthcare needs (and hoping none of my meds get banned by this admin, which would make it a mandatory monthly ‘fun road trip’)… 🙄

- Sigh. I just realized that I never did get back to Boorstin in the megathread. Or Frank Luntz. Or televangelism. Or Paul Weyrich and how he solved the problem of "Jimmy Carter may destroy the religious/political alliance we've been building just by being so genuinely Christian".

View full threadYeah there’s way more than formatting. Someone would have to handle the peer review etc. It’s like publishing a paper in a science journal, except for a terrifyingly much longer document. No one is willing & able to handle that lift. But we are planning to print up a few copies & get them bound
- As you’d do for a thesis (already bought the acid free paper!) this summer. One for us, one for my brother-in-law, and one each for the UCD and CUNY Grad Center libraries, if they’ll have them—or Michael & Sara if not (👋 Sara, surprise! 😂).
- YES!! @sarannmcd.bsky.social organized a fabulous event at @thegraduatecenter.bsky.social in March with us & Michael Staunton, which was our first opportunity to really hear from the academic community and honestly @bmckastro.bsky.social was speechless for days. It was amazing & heartwarming
- (& a little heartbreaking) to hear how valued her contribution was/is by the medieval history community.

- Well it does depend—this is someone who I knew well enough to pull out specific concrete examples of his competency that he was anxious about. So find someone to chat with, who, when you say, ‘I’m terrible at x!’ They can say, ‘well, what about y?’

- You think Hegseth knows enough to find them on a map? You think the admin cares enough to even bother pretending to try to stop it? I will try to hope these things…

- How about an Achtung? Baby?
- I caught up with a junior colleague who swung into the tail end of my last lecture for my grad class before we went out to grab some coffee—he said he loved my class (!) & then over coffee I did some reality testing with him to help combat an attack of imposter syndrome. He was only in town briefly
- And after coffee he said how glad he was that he’d decided to get in touch to catch up!! 🤩
