- Reposted by Patent BuddyScoop: Flock is adding people tracking to its license plate detecting cameras. This is a significant escalation in capabilities, and extremely concerning. Functionally means cops will be able to track anyone with a car anywhere they go directly within the Flock tool www.404media.co/license-plat...

- Reposted by Patent BuddyIt’s very strange that this article on the staffing issues at Newark Airport doesn’t mention the fact that DOGE fired 400 FAA employees a few months ago, and union officials warned about exactly these kinds of shortages.

- Reposted by Patent BuddyNSF-supported Unidata announced that almost their entire staff will be furloughed as of today. This is a huge threat to weather education and research at universities--Unidata provides crucial realtime data feeds of weather data, including satellite, radar, and observations.
- This is a seismic gut punch to the weather enterprise. It is impossible to overstate how important @unidata.bsky.social is in implementing many datasets/libraries (LDM, netCDF, THREDDS, metPy) we currently use in meteorological research & operations. www.unidata.ucar.edu/blogs/news/e...

- Reposted by Patent BuddyOK, this is wild. In September 2023, geophysicists across the world started monitoring a very odd signal coming from the ground under them. It was picked up in the Arctic. And Antarctica. It was detected everywhere, every 90 seconds, as regular as a metronome, for *nine days*. What the HELL? 1/

- Reposted by Patent BuddyThe intensely personalist nature of the regime, and the rapidity of the transition, means that there are only about ten people they "trust." That's not enough to run a small state, much less the US. The problems from that alone, separate from the rest, will take years to fully unfold.
- Reposted by Patent BuddyI'm very curious for Mike's thoughts on what access to LOC collections and copyright deposits would mean. My intuition is similar that the "raw access to works" story is likely overblown, but there is still substantial legal mischief that could result from manipulating records or permissions.
- 3: Access to works in the Library of Congress collections, and access to copyright deposits might benefit AI companies, but they're going to have much of what's available digitally already. 4: This will be a stream topic this week. I've also started up a write.as blog, and will have more there.
- Reposted by Patent BuddyHere's what motivated the standoff. My understanding is that DOGE is trying to get in to do what they do...but have been blocked thus far (again, from a personal contact who works there). www.washingtonpost.com/politics/202...
