the choices individuals make are incredibly important, but those choices exist within structures which are shaped by forces beyond their control. the dynamics of class conflict, and the social structures shaped by modes of production, are the most important factors determining individual choices
the dynamics of class conflict don't seem historically to have been the most important factors dictating individual choices. But beyond that, there's a lot of argument about whether social structures shape modes of production or vice versa and by the time you've accounted for that...
yeah the thing about marxists is they love to drop lines like that - "MOST things are explained by class conflict, with a dash of crazy randomness" - but like, when you go looking, BARELY ANYTHING is explained by class conflict.
"BARELY ANYTHING is explained by class conflict," my brother in christ, are you seeing the consolidation of the American capitalist elite around a fascist dictator?
that's not class conflict! you can't point to anything rich people do and say "ah, class conflict"
okay ketzelah! i can see we're not going to get anywhere on this. my central contention is that you don't really take the time to understand a marxist, so it's easy to dismiss what's useful about it. i'm not even reallly a marxist! I just think you're negatively polarized against annoying leftists.
Apr 21, 2025 20:11I do understand it, is the thing. The problem is that you are not allowed to criticize Marx. Literally that's the issue!
you aren't literate or capable of coherent critique. this is just a never ending tantrum about being the only middle aged trust fund manchild shitlib to actually fail downwards.
