- NM is solidly blue, but it is among the top five states that are using more tax dollars than we're receiving, not even close to being a giver. But we're a poor, relatively small state with a huge US government sector. A lot of scientific research.

View full threadIt makes sense that you'd see a lot of white men among the (further) left behaving badly, not unlike the white men on the right, ironically. It makes sense they'd deride the whole idea of "privilege" and claim these sorts of concerns are the result of a capitalist plot to distract the population. 🧵
- I don't think it's possible to fully understand what's happening in North America without including the simple truth that white male power has been strongly challenged, and this is causing a revanchist backlash all across the political spectrum.
- As a result, they're very aggressive while also aggrieved and entirely lacking in self-awareness and so terribly hypocritical. I'm not talking about everyone, just the straight white, cisgendered, educated, middle-class men who tend to be loudmouths on social media, or whetever. 🧵
- I think all of us are susceptible to some amount of using the sleights against us as shields from criticism; but the more accustomed to privilege one is, the more likely one is do this...partly because threats to privilege feel immediate and personal. 🧵

- It's their excessive privilege combined with the minor discomfort of being politically marginalized. They (perhaps willfully) conflate the extreme discomfort they experience when their privilege is challenged with the discomfort of being a political minority in a democracy. 🧵
