They decided that Republicans don’t care about it when their leaders do it so there’s no point in reporting on it. OTOH, Dems DO care, so they amplify even non-stories into scandals.
Repeat as often as necessary: Conservatives are seen as repping the "true Americans" the white herrenvolk, and thus their actions are scrutinized less closely, and press receives their bullshit utterances--down to the obvious lies-- with a child's credulity.
The Occam's Razor explanation for the political press's behavior is that they want to cover for Republicans and Donald Trump specifically. It is the best predictor for how any story will be received after the initial dust-up of Breaking News chyrons.
