- Lest we forget, Alcatraz is also world famous for the escape in 1962. Alcatraz then closed in 1963 because its remote location proved to be a horrible idea for numerous reasons. The pbs article on it is great evidence that this is stupid (imo The Last Podcast on the Left episode for researched info)
