In this exact thread of people complaining about running “republicans” in red states. The democrats need to figure out how to nominate and run principled conservatives in conservative states.
We are in the middle of a generational realignment of the parties. The party _has_ to figure out how to integrate former republicans into the party at all levels, because the Republicans are very welcoming to former democrats. Now is not the time for purity tests.
We can’t compromise on the constitution and human rights but maybe we can find some flex on regulations and taxes, etc. There are ways to accommodate differences in policy positions without opening the door for MAGA candidates.
We need to enact a law that says: if someone is elected President, all that person's assets, excluding their home, immediately go into a genuinely blind trust, automatically, without requiring their consent. (Consent comes in the form of deciding to run for President in the first place.)

You can do it by endorsing the R position on a policy. Or you could do it by banning stock trading in Congress.
One thing you will *have* do is, in a maximally attention-grabbing way, distinguish yourself from your electorate’s perception of a “generic democrat.” McCain was extremely smart about picking one or two Big Issues where he waged holy war on his own party and something along those lines might work.
McCain rarely took liberal positions, what he did do was take conservative positions that didn’t necessarily go along with party orthodoxy. The important thing isn’t being a centrist, it’s being true to your principles, even when party leadership disagrees.
Like it you’re just picking some random republican shit to be “moderate” about so you can win in Nebraska, voters can see that fakeness a mile away. Just do the right thing, the way you see it.
