- My mum, who suffers from advanced dementia, is in a really good (and therefore far from cheap) care home: loads of a her carers (perhaps even the majority) are from overseas. Not sure how the system could cope without them but absolutely sure that 'significantly' will really have to mean something!

- Nice. I truly think Dutton lost his seat for good when he left his electorate during Cyclone Alfred. Especially during an election year - performatively hand out blankets to affecteds in front of cameras like a normal politician. Running away was a mail in the coffin.

- One for Labour strategists to ponder. Compulsory voting would have a big & largely positive impact on elections here, diluting the power of polarising issues that rile up true believers and focusing attention on the centre ground and the disaffected (because of they all vote you can’t ignore them)
- What stuck with me: “One difference with America is that parties don’t have to mobilize the vote: The state gets the vote out for them. There’s not the same benefit in highlighting these sorts of issues around sexuality, gender, religion, which is seen in America. Your base is going to vote anyway.”
