I would like to hear from anthropologists and sociologists about the role of shame culture in maintaining pro-social behavior throughout human history and what we do when so many people, including those with power, seem immune to shame or even revel in defiance against it.
I don't know if I'm even using the right terms. I'm not talking modern critiques of "cancel culture". I'm mean the ways that humans have collectively managed to survive by having norms that protect the tribe, and discourage or punish potentially dangerous behavior through shame rather than violence.
Bruce Schneier’s Liars and Outliers comes to mind.
I will check that out! Does he discuss it in light of the current era? Like, MAGA and Trump/Musk/etc?
