Good morning, Bluesky.

The gutting of Polygon is a tale that has been told countless times at other sites, so this morning I share a bunch of independent sites that were spun up after other "aftermaths".

If you see someone you presume to be smart doing something you’re certain is stupid: always look to the incentive structure. Good for game design, excellent for understanding the actions of people in corporate settings.
Andor is great because it understands what Star Wars is fundamentally about: someone pressing a button and the thing they wanted the button to do not happening
OH MY GOD SHE CAME BACK!
Feel like shit just want her back
Hear no evil, hear all evil, hear some evil.
I don't remember the last time I was this emotionally invested

I'm so used to bar bathrooms with cutesy signs that I had to stop here and ask myself if I was a Mario or a Wario
1. LLM-generated code tries to run code from online software packages. Which is normal but
2. The packages don’t exist. Which would normally cause an error but
3. Nefarious people have made malware under the package names that LLMs make up most often. So
4. Now the LLM code points to malware.
LLMs hallucinating nonexistent software packages with plausible names leads to a new malware vulnerability: "slopsquatting."

LLMs can't stop making up software dependencies and sabotaging everything
: Hallucinated package names fuel 'slopsquatting'
Experimental post: Dubious Statements from Official Sources
In the spirit of April Fools' Day but without sacrificing the Supper Mario Broth veracity policy, I have compiled a variety of statements that are bizarre, but were published in official Nintendo-authorized sources.
I just want another excuse to post this
be careful yall, a new scam is going around on steam. A compromised account of a friend sent me a link to a fake playtest for a game called Sand. It's an actual game, the links aren't real.
I accidentally clicked it, but thankfully I'm sure my account is fine as I have like 50 safeguards on it.
its amazing how chatgpt knows everything about subjects I know nothing about, but is wrong like 40% of the time in things im an expert on. not going to think about this any further
every monster hunter game: don't worry you just trapped the monster, you didn't kill it. it is VERY much alive. we will take it back to base and study it for science. btw here is its spine as a reward
Note to self, the cooking cutscene in Wilds does not protect you from aggroing monsters.
Professor X: Hold, old friend. If you wish to take this military base hostage, you first must kill these five fifteen year olds I found.
Magneto: for fuck’s sake, Charles.
"You're not dead. And every morning that there's blood pumping in your body, you get to decide what to do about that big, bad world waiting for you out there."
I love
@worldsbeyondnumber.bsky.social so much.
Finished Citizen Sleeper 2. That was really good. I will be very surprised if it isn’t in my top games of the year come year end.
“hey did you finish naming those new Astro Bot levels?”

Eternal Wario Hockey is an unlockable air hockey game in WarioWare: Twisted in which Wario never loses. If the player has enough skill and patience to get 500 points, the game will forcibly try to make the player lose by elongating Wario's arms indefinitely.
Ah yes, the eternal 'should our art style be super realistic or fun and stylized' game dev debate.
No mention of why he was forced into exile?
Looks like Uncle O'Grimacey is coming back for Shamrock Shake season this year. It's been nearly 45 years since his last formal appearance - that has to be some kind of record, right?
for the love of god make having a nintendo online account required for first batch of preorders
look at the difference in engagement between twitter (left) and bsky (right). these were posted at the exact same time (we use a third-party social media platform thingy)

A TTRPG of moon-hopping adventure, arcane discovery, fatal conflict, & meditations on the changing nature of the self.
FINALLY, I can talk about REALIS, the tabletop game that I've been working on since spring of 2021.
I shouldn’t need to make a login account for every single thing.

Build Environmental Storytelling.
I guess I know what the scalpers will be buying up next... here is hoping that Nintendo and all of the retailers have learned something from the mess that was the PS5 and Xbox Series X launches.
Nothing is more effective as a game walkthrough than an enormous plaintext document from gameFAQS dot com.

5 tongue-in-cheek game writing exercises that are a more realistic representation of what most game writers do (in my experience) than a branching dialog tree:
Got some glow in the dark dice for Christmas and finally got around to charging them with a UV lamp. This was the first take!
Pretty amazing that nonprofit Watch Duty -- which says it has 150 volunteers working around the clock to track wildfires -- has become the most trusted source of information on LA fires. Operated by retired/volunteer firefighters, dispatchers, and reporters. Real people.

after days of grifters and con men at CES we stumbled upon the booth for VLC. they were all dressed as wizards and told us, "we have nothing to sell, we just decided to show up". i told them I'd been using their software to pirate media for 15 years and they said "keep doing that"
Software engineers of the world, I beg you.
Stop disabling copy and paste in password fields.

With this CES, it feels like we're nearing a plateau.
Games don't need bleeding edge video cards, since graphics can't go much higher without greater expense.
Apps don't need more powerful mobile chips.
The average folk don't need TVs above 4K.
The tech market is in search of something to sell.
Happy National “Back to work” day y’all
I use this to track the games I’m playing, have played, want to play, etc. It’s great!
For years, I've been developing Backloggd as a solo side project — something I could only dedicate a few hours a week to.
That changes today. I'm excited to announce I'm now taking on Backloggd as my full-time job! 🎉🎉🎉

Good morning
#ttrpg folks! Did you remember to nudge that indie dev you know, and tell them about our grants for scenario and game designers? The ones opening in January, that will help them pay for art, layout, editing, and other professional services?
I’ve been playing some Dragon Age Veilguard off and on for the last week or so. It’s not a bad game but not exactly clicking with me.
I’m trying to decide if I should put it down or keep giving it more time. I’ve heard it gets stronger as it goes on.
Twas the night before Christmas
And all through the air

www.patreon.com/posts/very-h...@bjkgames.com I started the DQIII HD-2D remake and am actually vibing with it. Rare for me to click with a DQ game.
It’s been great as a podcast game since its low story and more about exploration and leveling up.
Are you liking this one? I’m guessing you covered it on your podcast.

I see myself in this so much. I love RPGs and have been guilty of both.
I love RPG fans, because every time they say that something obscure is one of the best games ever, you either start it and discover the most subversive, well-built game ever played or something where all the dialogue is like "The dark is evil. But the light can beat it. Friendship is good."
“When you think about it, who put the ball in the hoop at the end of the day? Darth Vader. In this scenario the ball is the Emperor’s body and the hoop is that big energy shaft he got dunked into.”
@austinwalker.bsky.social is a god damn treasure
That’s credits on The Great Circle.
Fantastic game.
In the final section of Indiana Jones and the Great Circle. Not sure if I'm going to have time to finish it up tonight but this is fantastic.
Definitely falls somewhere in my top 10 games of the year.
