Building systems that build systems.
- RustWeek so far has been an absolute delight. It's been invigorating seeing so many old friends/coworkers. 🦀
- Here are all the posters I designed for RustWeek 2025! 1. "Box<impl Future>" (Back tot the Future) #rustweek #rustweek2025

- Turbofish! But Jurassic Parks tagline is 💯
- Hello Amsterdam 🇳🇱
- A probation officer in Oregon was fired for using a Nazi salute at work. An arbitrator restored his job www.oregonlive.com/pacific-nort...

- It wasn't. The article says the county pushed back on the arbitrator and they have not had their job restored yet

View full threadI'm not the one identifying as a Messianic Jew. Take it up with them.
- I'm taking up with the person who claimed that Jews believe Jesus is a prophet. Messianic Judaism is largely classified as a branch of Christianity despite its name.

- "some sects of Judaism Jesus was a Prophet" Nothing that would normally be called Judaism. Malachi is considered the last prophet ending Nevuah (time of prophecy)
- If you are a #jj user, I encourage you to set `git.write-change-id-header` to true with this release! github.com/jj-vcs/jj/di...
- I'd ideally like to default this to true, but I have some concerns about how numerous git tools might interact with it.
- Going to be in Utrecht week after next! 🦀
- I'm convinced being introduced to "Clair Obscur: Expedition 33" was an act of life sabotage by a friend of mine. This game is going places. Wow. Strong recommendation.
- I'd enjoy having any conversation about startups/technology that doesn't involve being asked about how I'm using AI
- Every time we have perfect weather in New York, I find myself doing research on e-ink display laptops.
- The perfect weather has never lasted long enough for me to actually get one of these laptops though
- I think it might be time for my biannual X <-> Wayland swap.
- I'm sure I've said this before, but Wayland seems actually ready these days. Looking forward to trying github.com/YaLTeR/niri in particular

- Would you happen to know of any codebase that you'd be able to point at and be like this is "the gold standard of error handling in rust"?

- Happy to chat about this if you'd like!

- Yeah, It currently works well enough for our anticipated use cases with minimal constraints. There have been some broader git community discussions about formalization though.

- It only sort of does. How those headers are handled is somewhat implementation specific, some operations/services preserve them, others don't.
- I have an ulterior motive in this work. I have my own change based code review tooling that I'll be publicizing more broadly soon.

- It's for a debt collection startup too 😨

- I quit my job on Monday! I'm very excited by what comes next.

- Another example of it looking more like the top of any .rs file these days github.com/benbrittain/...
- Our upcoming NYC elections might be unhinged, but I'm glad we've got RCV.
- Bragging about being good at AI prompting is no different than bragging about being good at Google queries in the 2000s. A temporarily useful skill that is a deep overfit for the future.
- github.com/benbrittain/... Beneath the name is the fact it's got some rudimentary buck2 based js/yarn/npm/rust interop.
- Thanks to some truly unhinged yak shaving, I've got a mostly functional yarn/node buck2 toolchain
- And to think, this started because I wanted to write a little React

- I'm literally wiring up a buck2 node toolchain right now for a similar reason
- I've learned a lot about node_module resolution today, somehow wrote no JavaScript 🙂
- But really I'm quite excited about this pnp format that the yarn folks put together

- Using podman over docker when I need to deal with containers makes me somewhat happier.
- Found myself on an Emirates flight after American Airlines cancelled my flight the day of. That was the most pleasant flight I've ever taken and I'm not dreading the next 12 hour leg after this layover. American really messed up here.

- I misread this for a second and got wayyy too excited that the first JJ conf was actually being organized 😅
- Off to Delhi for the week! 🇮🇳
- I'm writing HTML/CSS without JavaScript and it's... pleasant?
- Ok, there is a sprinkle of htmx, but still.
- I'm frustrated by Meta's open source interactions less often than I am impressed by buck2. It really is the nicest build system I've worked with.

- Not for reoccurring, but my friend group has entirely switched to partiful.com for one-off event invites instead of FB. I don't love it, but its a lot better than FB. Apparently it's fairly easy to reschedule an event though (even if not formally reoccurring), so it may meet your needs!
- When reviewing resumes, do you actually take the time to look at their code portfolio that they link too (usually on GitHub)? If they link to one and nothing is on it, do you consider that a bit of a red flag?

View full threadI certainly don't expect OSS work! Unpaid labor like that should only be done if you find it a fun hobby. Very different than a career.
- I'm just surprised someone would even link to their empty account then though. Portfolios are for showing off. I've seen this a bunch in the last few months of new grad hiring. Maybe it is the fact they were told to include it by some professional class.

- The lack of integrated toolchains could be addressed through a superior prelude though
- Whenever I give chatGPT a try, it just straight up hallucinates the answer. The experience I'm having with these tools is not what I'm seeing on the broader Internet. Unless it is, which is more worrisome.

- I think there are more design quirks from it's buck1 legacy than Bazel personally

- Peasant, king, rice. I was rather young, maybe 8 or so? I'm fairly certain I heard it as some sort of PBS-esque television programming. I want to say Wishbone, but I don't see an episode with that story
