- Saying goodbye now. I'm in hospice care
- Wishing you strength and peace
- Don't ever let any Republican tell you they're about freedom.
- New post from me: a free society should not tolerate routine masking and other attempts to conceal identity by ICE agents raiding worksites, stopping cars and arresting protesters. And it's part of a wider Trump administration strategy of pursuing impunity for rights-violating law enforcers.
- It is striking how much these measures—the masking, the excessive weaponry, the large numbers—speak of their own fear, which may have a basis. They cannot rely on the rule of law to protect them or on disciplined training in using force. Their only protection is to instill greater fear in others.
- Chris Geidner argues here that giving up on the rule of law is a self-fulfilling prophecy, when the courts so far have held. The rule of law is our only hope of success.
- Well that didn't take long
- Definitely worth the read, from an expert on habeas corpus
- Via "One First," me on why Stephen Miller's riff on suspending habeas corpus is not just factually and legally wrong (in multiple respects), but reflects a dangerous escalation in the Trump administration's rhetorical attacks on the courts: www.stevevladeck.com/p/148-suspen...
- Not to be missed: Sen. Chris Murphy's full opening remarks from yesterday's Senate hearings with Kristi Noem (DHS)
- Oh no, he would never, ever do that! I wonder if she is stupid enough to believe this.
- "Let's go, shall we?"
- "His decision to accept the presidency at the University of Florida feels less like a bold next step and more like a strategic retreat. … There, he can continue what he began here: playing dead."
- Execrable. Les jeux sont faits.

- Faculty friends at @ufl.edu, in response to Rufo's attack on Ono, r/wingers say "but he closed the U-M DEI office, he's one of us!" It is important to know that he was 100% pro-DEI as long as it earned him 1.3M/year at U-M. He closed our DEI office AFTER Florida offered him 3M/year.

View full threadThe offer isn't finalized. Fox just went after him and demanded that the offer be rescinded.
- He resigned w/o an offer?
- Irony of ironies
- Inspiring
- when the news broke of his offer
- Just a few days ago? But then it's all after the fact (the offer, the closing of DEI)
- but of course, Ono is also a conservative in his own right, so it's just as likely that he played the liberal for us--he had the most lucrative contract in public higher ed at UM, a record now beaten spectacularly by his new package.
- Appalling
- Rufo's attack expose his vulnerability in this regard -- a long history of illegal wokery. He needed better credentials. Of course he had help from the Republican regents he hangs with (Weiser, Hubbard) and the Dem regents who for a while gave Hubbard all she wanted in exchange for crackdowns
- When was Rufo's attack on Ono?
- to make sure he gets confirmed by DeSantis and his crowd.
- that seems tenuous
- Before there's an offer, it might have been auditioning. What's the point after?
- The "Stanza delle Lacrime," the room of tears, is where the newly elected pope goes to change into the white cassock and other papal garb before emerging on the balcony. This video shows the room readied with three sizes of cassocks ready to fit whatever size pope. www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jti-...
