- Reposted by Carl Müller-CreponLabour's immigration announcement today is a reflection of the paucity of honest debate by BOTH political parties over the last decade on this issue. Labour has never made a counter-argument, or been honest about economic cost of immigration curbs, so it's stuck making Tory/Reform arguments 1/n

- Reposted by Carl Müller-CreponReminder that earlier naturalization leads to better integration of immigrants. Extending the period necessary for settlement in the UK will have exactly the opposite effect of what Starmer and the Labour leadership claim. "Migrants first have to prove themselves" is a nativist trope and bad policy.

- Reposted by Carl Müller-CreponFor 3yrs already, we’ve wondered why exactly Orban sides w Ru over Ukraine. The competing hypotheses are energy policy, appeasement, dictators band together, and irredentism. This news points to the last hypothesis— Orban wants Pu to give him parts of Ukraine.
- Reposted by Carl Müller-CreponThe problem w this approach is that to get to the hard stuff, one has to spend a lot of time doing the stuff that a computer is very good at. AI in education allows you complete work without mastery, leaving you without the foundations for the hard stuff
- Reposted by Carl Müller-CreponProf.Gerald Roche ( @geraldroche.bsky.social ) shows that language loss in Tibet is not accidental but a result of state policy rooted in sovereignty. His research reveals how state power dismantles cultural and linguistic diversity in the name of national unity.

- Reposted by Carl Müller-Crepon🗳️ Populism is a warning sign. English local elections show it again: People feel abandoned & look scapegoats. Drawing on own research & others, I argue 👇🏽 💡 To counter populism: We need to reinvest in citizens, e.g. housing, health & dignity. Short 🧵 📖 www.socialeurope.eu/to-counter-p...

If we don’t know where they are, but we know someone’s holding them: kidnapping. Otherwise, if we don’t know where they are: disappearance.

- Reposted by Carl Müller-CreponIn aviation, flight-deck automation is generally understood to be a good thing: It reduces scope for erroneous human inputs and allows pilots to better manage and focus their limited resources. But there is a risk: Pilots may never really learn to fly manually, or they may let those skills atrophy.
- Reposted by Carl Müller-CreponI recall talking to @carlmc.bsky.social about this post-Trump 2.0 risk in journals not long ago, and here we are
- A short article of mine on civil-military relations and democratic backsliding had been accepted for publication in the journal "Connections". Then I received an email that the editors can't publish the paper unless I "remove the case study/examples of the United States" (1/x) #CivMilSky
- Reposted by Carl Müller-CreponThis may sound like special pleading. But if you add it up higher education is a huge economic asset to the UK, at the (for me anyway) rather knockdown price of having a few more high-skilled migrants than otherwise, and a few annoying know-it-all professors sounding off about things all the time.
- Reposted by Carl Müller-CreponWhy is the government and the news so indifferent to the meltdown happening in UK #HigherEd right now? Our universities are the envy of the world. Yet we are at risk of losing a generation of academics and damaging the sector beyond repair.
