For my money it reflects how desperate the Conservative Party has become, and how wretchedly far-right the Labour Party has shifted (gleefully) under Starmer, that some Tories now perceive it as strategically viable to outflank Labour *from the left*.

The national security advisor was communicating via a jerry-rigged version of an encrypted app that *functionally removed the encryption*, meaning an Israeli company could read all his texts.
