- Alsobrooks to RFK Jr: "You are the wrong person for this job. And you had in this hearing today the unmitigated gall to say at the beginning of your testimony that China is ahead of the United States in healthcare because China does not have DEI."

- Every month when I posted my New Scientist column, at least one asshole, if not more, reply with sarcastic and rude comments about how New Scientist has a paywall. It's such a common thing that I am always anxious about posting my column, esp if I don't want to waste characters pre-empting it

- just a reminder for the discussion of this that women aren't the only people who need abortion access and care
- Andry José Hernández Romero, I remember you, even if I do not know how to articulate my horror, rage, & sorrow at your treatment by my government. No one has heard from you in 61 days. As vigil, I’m posting a photo of you every day until you are returned from El Salvador.

- “It’s no simple thing to take a stand… Yet the students of the pro 🇵🇸 movement are still showing up… It is often the privileged, the safest people on earth, who are least capable of courage. They fear, as Brecht put it, that ‘to displease the possessors means to become one of the dispossessed.’”

- Message From the Chair: May 13: Last week, I promised an update about the progress Seattle Worldcon 2025 has made regarding our next steps related to remedying our mistakes related to the use of ChatGPT in panelist vetting. Much of … seattlein2025.org?p=3997

- I talked about all of the costs in class, ecological and intellectual, and my students were really great and I wish I could teach them again
- I struggle with the reporting on ChatGPT in education because it often confirms society’s negative bias against young people—oh no, this generation is unsaveable!—when it’s possible to just educate people to be less credulous about it. which is why I wrote this: so teachers could print and assign it
- Also what I learned from my students is that no one was telling them what AI was, how it worked, and what the problems associated with it were
- So just to say that I've now seen a real time incident where an AI-based detection tool that is intended to detect AI-use is actually so fucking incompetent that it thought a bibliography and stuff in quotation marks was plagiarism!!!! & other profs are trusting these assessments & auto-deducting!!!
- re: @leximcmenamin.com's reporting on this: I accidentally had TurnItIn turned on for my student's final papers and one emailed me worried because her paper had been flagged as 21% plagiarized. The problem? Her bibliography. She told me other profs say >10% is an auto deduction. THAT IS A PROBLEM.
