- Every word of this
- Gosh this impulse of "bad person says bad things so to hell with the law or due process" seems oh so very familiar. Where have I seen this before? bsky.app/profile/alej...
- “What would you do? Cut a great road through the law to get after the Devil?” “Yes, I'd cut down every law in England to do that!” “Oh? And when the last law was down, and the Devil turned 'round on you, where would you hide, Roper, the laws all being flat?" bsky.app/profile/alej...

- Bravo to @doubleaspect.blog for this eloquent, intelligent, morally serious post about the incoherent, puerile, and deeply unserious petition to Parliament to revoke Elon Musk’s Canadian citizenship. Read it.
- New post: the petition demanding that Elon Musk be deprived of his Canadian citizenship is a disgrace. The tendency it represents, if unchecked, would lead Canada to become just what Canadians abhor in the United States. doubleaspect.blog/2025/02/25/a...

- The third party blocklists are particularly bad for this. I've been inadvertently blocked by at least one person I know personally, apparently because they subscribed to a blocklist of people who follow bad people.
- We kicked holocaust denier Ernst Zündel out of Canada. Why the hell would we let Elon Musk have any claim on Canada? He is a fascist threatening the people of Ukraine. I am proud to be helping drive this asshole from our shores. www.ctvnews.ca/canada/artic...

- Personally, I can't stand the man either. But I thought we were better than this. If it was wrong for the Harper government to revoke the citizenship of convicted terrorists, it's no better when a mob wants to do it to someone who hasn't even been tried, much less convicted. bsky.app/profile/doub...

- Good lord, almost 10K likes and reposts in support of revoking citizenship from someone who obtained it legally (by birth). Never mind the law or the Charter, he's a terrible person so eff him. How is this different from Trumpism? Either the rule of law is for everyone, or it's not the rule of law.
- Mr. Angus, respectfully, why are you doing this? You know there's no legal means to revoke Musk's citizenship, and that changing the law to do so would breach the Charter—because you and your party rightly voted against it a decade ago. Those signing the petition may not know better, but you do.

- I think this is so self-evidently correct to any lawyer that we may forget it's not obvious to everyone! I've been practising >20 years and I can't imagine ever advising a client to disregard a law imposing criminal penalties merely because the enforcement risk was low. Yikes.

- That's fair. I didn't mean to dismiss his article on the basis of something else he said years earlier; the article should of course be judged on its own merits. I only meant to illustrate that the purity politics was consistent with what I'd previously seen from him
- I've found the author's 🦋 and 🐦 presence consists largely of insufferably smug moral preening, where any effort at nuance is at best merely self-delusion, and at worst cover for grift. To be fair I thought this article was better than that, but the purity politics were hardly a surprise
- This long-deleted tweet from him sums up his thinking pretty well imo (source: freddiedeboer.substack.com/p/complexity...):
- Spicy, interesting and very well written. I have my differences with parts of it, and I think all of it is well worth reading.

- been married >20 years, and reading this article I, um ... [squirms uncomfortably in his chair] felt seen 😬
- Just splendid work from @jamesbloodworth.bsky.social ripping off the mask from Douglas Murray. The next time someone asks me why I object to Murray being lionized by so many in our community—and I've had that conversation more than once since Oct 7!—this is the article I will point them to.
- “Looking back at Douglas Murray’s public career, what is striking is how little the core of his thinking has evolved. Instead, it has calcified, expressing itself in an ever-belligerent posture of ethnic and cultural chauvinism”— @jamesbloodworth.bsky.social. www.prospectmagazine...
- On a related point, for those (like me) who wondered what the hell happened post-Oct 7 that so many on the left couldn't even manage to condemn mass murder: www.forthedeskdrawer.com/p/as-long-as...

- Says more about the audience on this site, I think. Those who suffered under or because of Castro, Chavez, Arafat, Hamas, etc etc might be a lot less sympathetic to this deluge of hagiography. Carter had many virtues and many flaws: he was a human being, not a saint.
- Much respect to @radiofreetom.bsky.social for calling it as he sees it. I'd agree with the replies saying "this isn't the time or place" if he'd made such comments at the funeral. But this is a public forum, Carter was a public figure, and you can always choose not to read criticism of the deceased!

- Because I find your posts consistently interesting, informed, thoughtful, and funny. That's more than enough reason, but also I deeply admire how you've worked to bring good and meaning out of tragedy, and publicly shown such grace and even forgiveness towards many of those who played a part in it

- Depends on the specific facts (sorry, lawyers gonna lawyer). It's hard to imagine the US doing so by force, but if so, then it's 1812 again. If it's by political pressure, then organize, organize, and resist by all democratic means. (Full disclosure: I'm dual, raised in 🇺🇸 but living in 🇨🇦 >30 years.)

- It's like they're mortally afraid of even the possibility of common cause with a Bad Person. Since a Bad Person is 100% Bad, anything they support must also be Bad, so if they say they're supporting something Good they _must_ be lying. This seems like a great way to build coalitions for change! 🙄

- I agree! Imho there's no basis to ban him, but I was trying to describe the contrary view as neutrally as I could. And yes, I had followed the stats on Clearsky (which links to the petition on its homepage!) and it's interesting that for all the blockers, they're still just 0.3% of total users.
- It's an interesting question. I saw two themes: (1) treating 🦋 like a physical space or community (analogous to college students insisting on deplatforming speakers, rather than, say, just boycotting them), and (2) demanding 🦋 show its loyalty (you're either with us, or you're with the Bad Person)

View full threadFair enough! I was aware of that from the infamous barpod 17-part deep dive, but I took the liberty of a little poetic licence. I couldn't resist the irony of all the pearl-clutching re the 🥝 email to Jesse about the 🦋 hack, then a few days later a wave of people disclosing his supposed home address
