- Why is creativity a choice? - What do we get wrong about creative confidence? - What role do emotions play in creativity? - What about creative blocks? - Why do we have to go beyond talking about the individual when discussing creativity?
- My latest for Psychology Today, an excerpt from The Creativity Choice. The way to successful creative problem solving is surprising and leads through problem finding - identifying problems and exploring them from different angles. shorturl.at/62pni #creativity #problemsolving #ProblemFinding
- Time spent on mulling over the problem and trying out its different features might not feel productive because we are not landing on a solution. However, it is a way to ensure a successful solution.
- An analysis of discussions in problem solving teams showed that successful teams spent more than half of the time on exploring the problem, framing it in different ways, and reframing it @rrpcreativity.bsky.social
- There is media and then there is @npr.org. It was fun and personally meaningful to speak with Berly McCoy at Short Wave about my new book, The Creativity Choice #creativity #innovation #books www.npr.org/2025/05/06/1...
- Today is the day! The Creativity Choice is out! Starting to see pictures in the wild. Some book bites in my latest newsletter. That I hope get people wanting to come for more: open.substack.com/pub/creativi...
- Creativity is about thinking and problem solving, but at least as much about feeling, using emotions, and dealing with them. #TheCreativityChoice publication date: TOMORROW!
- “Perhaps even more surprisingly, just learning what creativity is and how it works can help our own creativity.” Reading the intro on Libby and I’ve highlighted a dozen passages already.
- The Creativity Choice is coming out May 6. It applies the science of creativity to discuss not only how we come up with ideas, but how to do we make them happen. Never expected to be here when I started my career as a researcher. #creativity #innovation #books Thread...
- Thank you so much, Alex. Hope you find it helpful. It seems to me that people don't talk enough about the emotional side of the creative process. And now we have 30+ years of research to draw from...

View full threadRejections of my book proposal were illustrative. Publishers were looking for step by step creativity cookbooks (which is not how creativity works) or books by creators from a handbook of companies in so called creative industries.
- It was quite a ride. Happy to engage with academic colleagues and hope for more voices to share our work with the general audience. If we don't, those who work in the creativity space, might fill in the blanks with what seems like common sense, but might not be supported by science.
- For a long time, I wanted to be a basic science researcher. Never expected to be interested in public facing communication, but life is interesting and that has become at least as important to my work.
- I was inspired by frustration. Not many people who do great research on creativity do not write books for the general audience and those books that exist give at best an incomplete picture
- Creativity is social. Sure, a lot creative work happens in teams and organizations large and small and through collaboration. But creativity is not social only in the sense of collaboration. #creativity #innovation #networking #relationships #culture open.substack.com/pub/creativi...
- Creativity is social implicitly -- through the historical time in which we live and what it makes possible (or not), culture, and things and ideas we surround ourselves with (sometimes quite literally in our work spaces).
- And creativity is social directly. Research shows that casual relationships are especially helpful when we are looking for new ideas, whereas close relationships are beneficial when we are working to develop the ideas and build them into performances and products.
- The word empathy was coined to describe 'feeling into' art. But what do we feel? Can we intuit what the artists intended? And does it matter where we encounter the art? @templetonrelig.bsky.social @psychtoday.bsky.social #art #emotions #museum www.psychologytoday.com/us/blog/crea...
- #Creativity is long and obstacle filled. But it is not about grit, sticking with it no matter what. It requires persistence and #curiosity. And that can mean knowing when to change or even abandon ideas New paper: tinyurl.com/bdw7uy7y
- Creativity and innovation have social and economic benefits. But there are also less obvious psychological benefits. Creativity can boost mood, help regulate emotions, and build a sense of meaning in life. #creativity #wellbeing #meaning #emotionregulation www.psychologytoday.com/us/blog/crea...
- Coming up w/ideas is only the start of the creative process. To make them tangible, we need to first know what to expect from creative work. Then, the daily creative work takes a lot of self-regulation #creativity #innovation #selfregulation creativitydecision.substack.com/p/realizing-...
- My latest at Psychology Today. The value of original ideas might seem obvious, but we are often times left puzzled and can't help but ask, "How did they think of that!?" when we encounter something exceptionally creative. #creativity #ideas www.psychologytoday.com/us/blog/crea...
- Original ideas do not come to us out of thin air. Rather, they come from experience. And there are ways to curate our experience to make them more likely.
- I am delighted to announce that my book, The Creativity Choice, is now available for preorder. The book asks how to transform your creative ideas into something tangible. And it provides what you need to know to make it so. #creativity #books
- From building creative confidence to overcoming creative blocks to creating the conditions for continued creativity (or, creativity is social even when it does not look like it).
- Delighted to share my conversation at WonderSpace. We talked about #inspiration, #creativity and how to make it happen, places to recharge, and stories of hope we find in others (big shout out to ElifGokcigdem and ONE - Organization of Networks for Empathy!) ourwonder.space/episodes/_145
- Latest newsletter. The decision to act on our creative ideas and persist in making them happen has much to do with our feelings and how we harness and manage them. Research on how below. #creativity #innovation #emotions #emotionalintelligence open.substack.com/pub/creativi...
- Great conversation on the Matters of Experience podcast. We chatted about how #emotions can be harnessed in the service of creative work and managed when they get in out way #EmotionalIntelligence #creativity #design rss.com/podcasts/mat...
