Yosher Koach/יושר כוח
Person of the books. In my Rashi era.
Holding on to Jewish delight.
- My class finished tractate Horayot today and the end is 🧑🍳😘 A dilemma was raised before the Sages: Between Rabbi Zeira and Rabba bar Rav Mattana, which of them is preferable? www.sefaria.org/Horayot.14a.6
- Rashi's commentary here strikes me as having more layers than he perhaps intended It's on Lev 20:13 - read to prohibit male homosexual sex (among other readings) www.sefaria.org/Leviticus.20... משכבי אשה. מַכְנִיס כְּמִכְחוֹל בִּשְׁפוֹפֶרֶת: means he inserts as a brush into a tube www.sefaria.org/Rashi_on_Lev...
When strangers live in the land, don't wrong them. The strangers who live with you shall be as citizens; you shall love them as yourself, for you were strangers in Egypt.
- Massachusetts neighbors tried to stop ICE from ripping away a mother who was with two children, including a newborn baby. The agents had no warrant. Those who want “illegals” to uphold the law should start by upholding it themselves. This is vile, cruel, and unforgivable. Period. #OnYourSide

- This one at least *has* a kernel that fits: הגר הגר אתכם ואהבת כמוך Talmud and Rashi often not so much, though I found a pithy one that raised so many questions for me. Give me a sec, I'll post it
- In case anyone else was waiting for this to come out to save on shipping: free (media mail) shipping. Now I just have to contend with my impatience for five more months.
- A reminder that pre-orders are available for Rabbi Abby Stein's SOURCES OF PRIDE, a look at Jewish views on gender and sexuality in a range of core texts. www.benyehudapress.c... 1/2
- We were copying the same thing from Sefaria at the same time. 😄 There should be a word for that

- Take it for what's helpful, best of luck, don't get burned out. 👍
- I'm interested in hearing about textual analysis by a variety of voices. I listen to podcasts from across the spectrum and am happy to add one more. The trick is that you need to figure out who your audience is.
- It's very easy to repeat, say, the bits of the Talmud that almost everyone who's been around a bit has heard -- a lot of people haven't heard them, but the people who are around spend more time in the space and might be more interested.
- This year, when reading our parshiot two things stuck with me. The first is all these directions for Yom Kippur in the temple brought to mind the Vidui. We confess together to transgressions because we are *all* responsible, in part, for harm done in our society. /1 www.sefaria.org/Machzor_Yom_...
- Being responsible, each to the other, זה לזה, is part of having a society. We say ashamnu because we are all guilty. The second is this: הַגֵּר הַגָּר אִתְּכֶם וְאָהַבְתָּ לוֹ כָּמוֹךָ you shall love each foreigner residing with you as yourself It is hard to hold both this year. /2 www.sefaria.org/Leviticus.19...
