- Both the cabin and rocks beneath it consist of 300 million year old marine limestone, so at one point, those rocks were under an ocean. Now, they sit at 10,000 feet above sea level... #newmexico #hiking #geology #photography #Albuquerque #landscape

- The Three Gun Spring Trail near Cedar Crest, #NewMexico has some great views! It's best to hike in the spring or fall, because unlike the higher altitude trails, most of it is exposed to the sun, and one can get very hot hiking it! #Hiking #photography #landscape #Albuquerque #photo #mountains
- I like this photo because it gives a sense of scale to how tall the Sandia Mountains are!
- Valles Caldera National Preserve in #newmexico is peaceful now, but about 1.2 million years ago, a spectacular volcanic eruption created a 14-mile-wide circular depression in the earth which is now the valley in the photo. #volcano #hiking #photography #landscape

The 2nd season finale was dedicated to firefighters including the Granite Mountain Hotshots, 19 of whom died fighting the Yarnell Hill Fire
- I lived in Tucson during the Yarnell Hill Fire, very tragic... I've seen some of the burn scars from the 2013 fires. Still pretty extensive!

- It is a gorgeous place, no doubt!
- I was introduced to Valles Caldera by way of the TV show Longmire. It was used as the location for Walt's cabin. My decades old geology classes kicked in while watching and I thought "that looks like a volcanic crater complete with lava domes", so I looked it up and sure enough it was.
- That's very cool!

- You migh be able to see the "Three Sisters" from that altitude, depending on what direction you're arriving. They are a series of three hotspot volcanoes lined up in a row. They were formed the same way the Hawaiian Island chain was formed, just on dry land.
- The Clearlake Caldera is also pretty active. 100 mini earthquakes a day to remind us it's here.
- There is definitely still some volcanic activity in the area, as evidenced by the extensive geothermal systems which have been identified: www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti...

- The #LaLuzTrail is my favorite trail to hike in the #sandiamountains of #NewMexico. It's not an easy hike, though. Some sections are very narrow, and become treacherous in winter. There's also an altitude change of 4,000 feet. #hiking #photography #landscape

- The Sandias are great! One time, I took the tram up, and was planning to take it back down, but the winds picked up so much that it was unsafe to ride the tram, so I and a few other hikers hitched a ride down to the base with tram employees down a back road.

- Thank you! I've hiked in the Jemez area several times. There are some beautiful trails up there.
- Sometimes when hiking, one encounters the locals. This is a Prairie rattlesnake, Crotalus viridus, which I saw while hiking the east side of the Sandia Mountains in #newmexico. It let me know it was not happy I was there... #hiking #snakes #photography #albuquerque #reptiles
- Some hiking trails in #newmexico exhibit geological features known as hoodoos. The harder rock on top (known as a caprock) protects the softer rock beneath from wind and rain. If the caprock is lost, the underlying rock will erode away. #hiking #hoodoos #geology #photography #landscape
