- #OTD in 1995, CRIMSON TIDE was released. The Navy declined to assist in the production because of issues with the script, so the director got the shots he needed by hiring boats and helicopters to chase down USS Alabama (SSBN-731) when the sub was spotted leaving Pearl Harbor.
- #OTD in 1921, the submarine USS R-14 ran out of fuel and lost radio communications while searching for a missing ship. The crew stitched together blankets, hammocks, and battery deck covers and then spent 5 days under sail to travel 120 miles back to Hawaii.
