That time a mourning dove tried to land on a spinning ceiling fan and sent a POOF of feathers over the communion table stands out. There was a horrible moment of dramatic irony watching it from the, uh, bird's eye view in the choir loft
I don't have a lot, but...I had a friend in college who really hyped up that he was gonna deliver a fire and brimstone message during midweek chapel one night and then, when he did... No one cared. There was definitely some plank-and-speck going on but I think the crickets bother him to this day.
Really hard to narrow this down (so many different kinds of surprising chaos are possible in liturgy!) but I think the spontaneous baptism of a dear friend & coworker takes the cake for me. Nothing wilder than the Holy Spirit.
Second place is probably my first Easter Vigil at SSJE when a woman’s long hair caught fire. No one left, no one even blinked, & we just smelled burnt hair for the next three and a half hours. Extremely metal
I had a funeral once where the guy's sister took a phone call–in the front row–in the middle of the service, literally as I was praying. I will think about that forever.
